It's just a grotty place with a grotty atmosphere, proper spit and sawdust pub, nothing wrong with that but the way some are talking on here you'd think it was a proper decent music venue that's packed out every week, when in reality it's a sh1tty boozer with bad covers bands.

I used to have a similar haunt that I enjoyed, despite knowing it was an absolute hole.

You’re a snob and I claim my £5.

If that’s your idea of a spit and sawdust pub then blimey.

Got to say, I’m with Sitters on this one. As a Chantry lad, he knows a shîthole when he sees one!

I refute this accusation, as you can see from this photo of me as a young boy, I'm as common as muck.

The Black Horse is like The Salthouse when compared to the likes of The Drum and Monkey and that was an absolute step in class on the likes of The Belstead Arms, The Thomas Eldred, The Kingfisher and so on.

Aye, D&M was the f*cking pits, but the Drum actually had some very credible gigs there, unlike The Black Horse. Galows, Frank Turner, Our Time Down Here and a few others, all played there in early 2000's on their way up. Penknifelovelife too, I think?

I wouldn't even bother with the other pubs mentioned, does that make me a member of the aristocracy again?

Just reminiscing about the days where a swift half always ran the risk of coming with a side order of violence.

Those days are over for me and my $10 craft beer now. Can't even get hold of a pickled egg these days

Good luck to them. A bit more practice at pulling a pint might be needed though:

In the old days last season one could always rely on Amy to pull a proper pint with aplomb.. always useful with her jugs....

Back in the day it was a hovel, think it's had a bit of lippy and a mini skirt these days, but haven't been in to witness the make up.

I know Amy well enough to know she'd laugh at this comment, before anybody takes offence.

She's not planning to return to bar work again. Complete change of direction now. But a very, very good barmaid she was. Very friendly, approachable, could take a bit of banter, but certainly let punters know if they overstepped what was acceptable.

You're over egging their formula and alleged success, it was a grotty little pub full of grotty little people listening to grotty little bands.

It was never "good at what it did" - Ipswich has a pretty rich history in alternative music over the last 30 years or so, the Black Horse wouldn't even make the footnotes.

"Full of grotty little people"

That was kinda the OP's point and the rather ridiculous snobbery on display by yourself aside, shows the previous business model worked.

Fine if the pub wasn't to your tastes, it certainly wasn't to mine but just because you didn't like it doesn't mean others weren't allowed to.

Drum and Monkey was the Sporting Farmer, right?

Got a bit lively in there now and again.

I went into the Swan around 4 years ago for the first time in heck knows how many years and that was the most disgusting pit I had seen in quite some time.

The Swan used to be a nice place once upon a time.

The Swan yes?

I walked in there and as expectant eyes were looking at me I felt obliged to order a drink.

I only went for a half cos I couldn't wait to leave asap. It was so filthy I didn't even want to touch anything, but figured my immune system might get a boost if I only stayed a short time for a small drink.

I also needed a wee which I only managed by breathing shallowly through my sleeve.

There is usually an easier way than that to have a wee.
