Just gone to pieces ... 15:39 - Aug 25 with 1152 viewsbackwaywhen

Lost our shape , our confidence, why oh why do we try to play out from the back with such poor quality players in the back 4 .

Well....now that's the question.

We don't really have ball playing defenders, so 'why' indeed do we play out from the back.

That question is partially answered by the signing of Hawkins. You see, we are utterly stuck at the moment - if the defenders or the keeper go long, we don't have the personnel up there to hold it up. Hence to the desire to play from the back.

At the moment, we appear to be caught in two minds. There is playing out from the back and then there is poor decision making. We should be trying to get the ball out from the back to our ball playing midfielders quickly and asking our defenders to play a 10 or 20 yard pass is within their remit.

Asking our defenders or our defenders choosing to try and pass their way out of our own box or eve 6 yard box is asking for trouble.

No issue from me trying to play out but......today shows what happens with poor instruction and/ or poor decision making.

Fortunately the future of our CB ranks in Ndaba and Woolfenden are both extremely comfortable on the ball and playing out from the back. Just remains to be seen if Lambert trusts them as a pair.

I asked below. Do you see those two as our CB pairing for the season?

Ndaba desperately needs a good loan spell in the National League or L2.

If Lambert wants to create an identity based on playing out from the back then he needs defenders who are comfortable on the ball. A large part of our recruitment this summer really should have been acquiring a ball playing CB to match Woolfenden. Instead we are going to see Chambers put under immense pressure playing a way which is not to his strengths. Chambers, Wilson and Nsiala are defenders you’d categorise in Wycombe’s direct approach - no nonsense, get rid.

The only hope now is that with Ward being an LB, we still have an experienced head when Chambers is faded out of the team.

I have no doubts Chambers will start the season, however Toto may be playing himself into PL's thoughts. Ndaba will start as 4th choice at best.

I agree that a loan spell for Ndaba would be good but only until January IMO. If he comes back fit and firing, then he could be very useful in the second half of the season

We need to hold our nerve with it, there will of course be teething problems and we have to accept that if this is happening at one part of the pitch there should be advantages elsewhere once we beat the initial press

Ironically we need to have a plan B in case we lose our first choice defence. Vincent-Young and Woolfenden can cope playing out from the back and so, seemingly, can Ward but Chambers and Nsiala both struggle with it, as do all our reserve defenders. Part of the problem last year was the loss of KVY and Garbutt, leaving just Woolfenden as the passer who could be easily closed down.

I hope Hawkins introduction will give us a different look just in case we need it.

100% this and been saying the same thing. Its going to take time and more mistakes to get this right and there is an element of not having the perfect personal to do it. But we have to go with this to progress.

Against L1 opposition we should have enough to get through with some mistakes.

Ideally you lose Toto and bring in a ball playing senior (left sided) defender to give you 2 stoppers and 2 ball players so can mix and match with what is required

The mad thing is we try and play out from the back where we split the CBs, but it's that second phase of the ball which we find difficult and invariably go long anyway, once we're put under pressure. The ball playing midfielders should be making themselves available to receive the ball. If you look at someone like Ederson at City, soon as he's passed the ball out to his defenders or midfielders he's moved into another position to make himself available. He never stays stationary, he makes sure he's an option.
