The two genres I love most in entertainment are comedy and sci fi. Whilst I could name you 50 great sci fi movies, with comedy I think I'd struggle to name 5 really great ones. I liked the silliness of the Pythons and Airplane!, Men In Black was amusing, Some Like It Hot was pleasant but not really laugh out loud, The Big Lebowski (which everyone seems to love) I thought was massively overrated.

The Alan Partridge movie was good, but not as great as the TV series,' Anchorman was alright, the Austin Powers films were fairly amusing. Spinal Tap, meh, dumb. The various Simon Peg ones are pretty good.

I dunno, am I missing something or does comedy just not work was well in a movie format? Any I've missed that are really good? Annie Hall is usually up there in the 'best' lists, not seen that.

Maybe I've just been fed too many dumb American teen/comedy movies over the years, but while I can happily binge on funny podcasts or TV series', I tend to be disappointed when I sit down for a comedy movie.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is great, same director as What we do in the shadows and JoJoRabbit - both worth watching.

Grand Budapest hotel (plus other Wes Anderson), Four lions both very good, also more direct / slapstick comedy similar to those listed above.

In the Loop very funny political comedy. Death of Stalin would be funny if you enjoy the writing of Armando Ianucci.

Not much of a mention so far for dark comedies, such as
Three billboards outside roping, missouri
In Bruges

All good shouts there.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a marvellous film full stop, never mind it's very funny too.

Comedy is ultra-subjective imo. Personally, I've never really found Monte python funny, but loved Fish Called Wander.

I also like that sort of Caddy Shack / Something about Mary / meet the Fockers style thing for a bit of light chuckling.

Yeah, true... like that Something About Mary 'dumb American teen' stuff I hate to be honest. Not seen A Fish Called Wander for years, forgotten about that. Can't even remember what it's about but I do remember liking it.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

Get Out is a great film, it's very much a dark comedy though.

Safety Not Guaranteed is an excellent quirky comedy.

We watched SNG recently, that was very good. Very original premise. I love how it's kind of sci fi but not.

Get Out I haven't seen, heard it's good but didn't think it was a comedy.

Get Out is probably more of a thriller/horror but does have some darkly comedic vibes going on as well. I tend to find films that wouldn't have 'comedy' as their main genre to be better and more amusing than outright comedies. I think comedy generally lends itself better to shorter formats. It's hard to sustain the laughs for 90 minutes plus whilst driving forward a plot that's worth following.

That delicious bicycle scene is probably my favourite bit of film ever. Their faces are so expressive, and even the bull deserved an Oscar.

Yes.

What I love about it is the scene and the song is so wrong in purist Western terms. But it's by not sticking to the genre that makes it such a great film.

Sex Lives Of The Potato Men - Johnny Vegas and Mackenzie Crook are the main characters!

Its very crude as the title would suggest and if that is within your boundaries of humour then you may well love this film.
