Utterly, utterly stupid to swim it unaccompanied but must be gutted to be rescued 500m from shore - unless absolutely unable to move any further. That’ll learn him.

The other one at least had a fur coat on to keep warm. Sensible.

Umm I think you read it wrong.. he was swimming from Dover to Calais, and was picked up 500m off the shore of Dover after 8 hours!
