Last post for a while 07:57 - Sep 4 with 18644 views | bluelagos | Off tomorrow to Penzance to start Sunday morninng on a 1250 mile ride from Lands End to O'Groats. After gettng to Bath we cross the Welsh border before skirting the Peak district on up through Cumbria before skirting the weat coast of Scotland via Oban, Ullapool and finally JoG. So far have managed 3950 miles training, longest ride 72 miles, most challenging ascent 3000 ft in 30 miles. The longest day will be 82 miles, the biggest ascent 9000 ft the day we ride to Skipton 3 crashes so fsr, only 1 at speed, the other two unclipping fails. Attacked yesterday by a wasp that got inside my mouth and left me looking like the Elephant man for a few hours. (Pic on the link) Paying for the trip but seemed silly not to raise a few quid for a good cause too. Chose an Ipswich based foodbank that I know help the most needy, when they need it. https://localgiving.org/fundraising/Nick-cycling-LEJOG-FIND/?fbclid=IwAR2ljCDt6V https://www.findipswich.org.uk/ Thanks to all who have already thrown in a few quid and any more gratefuly received. It's the one in Cumbria that the kids walk up in trainers, t-shirts and shorts with just their mobile phones to guide them - mountain rescue nightmare! :-)

Well, it is called 'Windy Mountain' for a reason!

Sore legs but differents muscles to the cycling ones so not worried. First impressions. Cornwall is very run down albeit the beaches and scenary look good. The hills up and over exmoor looked long. The costal hills steep!

Did you maybe miss a "get" out of that?! Anyway - no you couldn't as I'll now be installing remote cameras at every station along that line Seriously, if you can manage to see the Ribbeshead Viaduct from the ground it's worth a slight detour, impressive structure on a massive scale. All best, and kee-ee-eep powdering your cheeks :)

Day 1. 69 miles (supposed to be 66 but mates Garmin ran out of juice so had ended up cycling round Falmouth looking for our hotel. 25% max gradient (not a typo, tour de france dont do over 10%!) 2 cleat screws lost. One bus close shave, 2 Cornish sunday drivers. One 250m hill walked, wasnt happy with gravel, tightness and gradient. If we had met a car would have been dangerous. Knacckered!

Dread to think what losing a cleat screw means tho, sounds as tho it has the potential to make a backside very sore!

Are you nearly there yet? Good luck BL. That’s the worse day by most accounts, so hope that turns out to be true for you.

So a cleat sits under your show and is the bit that clips you onto the pedals. It is held in place by three screws. 2 misssing ones means it moves around which means your foot does too. So you lose a bit of power as your leg can be off center. Also can cause issues with your knee if you cycle with a non straight leg.

They hold the bit on the bottom of the shoe that clips into the pedals. I don't use 'em myself, too scared and i don't go fast enough.

I’d be more worried about not being able to clip out if the cleat starts rotating around on one screw. (May not be an issue if cleat is recessed into your shoe). If that could happen though, I’d borrow a screw from the other shoe if I was you, and make sure 2 screws are tight on both shoes. [Post edited 6 Sep 2020 22:25]

All done. Brought a spare pair and used the screws from those.

Does that mean if you're not careful you could swivel round and find yourself facing the wrong way?
