Going to take weeks to sort out according to Hancock. Anyone know if any of our European neighbours are experiencing similar challenges?

My boy was sent home from school yesterday for coughing, once, and isn’t allowed back for ten days unless he’s been tested. There doesn’t appear to be any chance of a test.

Given that most of them have bee testing at far, far higher rates than us since February and March, I'm guessing 'no'.

I popped to the local shop earlier and 5 live was on in the background.

On some phone-in a chap was saying he'd found it impossible to find a test and in frustration just turned up at a drive in centre. Reckons it was practically empty and he was seen immediately.

When he tells his mates they no doubt will follow his example.

Do you think the school are right to take this action?

The problems with testing being readily available to everyone is that it won’t be a one off test people will be anxious again in a weeks time and want another test.

Sent home for a single cough? No other symptoms?

That's not really on and massively draconian by the school, they won't have anyone attending by the end of the month if they keep that up - it's that time of year.

I read yesterday that where I live, a pupil in year 9 had tested positive, so the school have said that all of that year group now have to self isolate for 14 days.

Not doubting the OP's integrity, but I find that pretty unlikely. And if that is accurate, pretty extreme. However, I guess it depends on their risk assessment.

As a kid, this would be amazing to learn. 10 ten days off just for coughing? Whole classes will be at it.

I have full sympathy with the teaching staff.

My boy is asthmatic though so if he’s off every totem he coughs, it’ll be a long winter. We are working on a plan with his specialist.

His football team want him playing on Saturday.

They apparently sent loads of them home yesterday, followed by a parent comms saying keep kids home if unsure.

If they have clear symptoms then yes, keep them home.

For cases like this though their approach will result in an empty school given it's cold and cough season anyway and the kids continuing to not have an education over the winter.

There is no perfect answer and I understand them not wanting to have C19 going round the school (for teachers health as well) but it needs to be more structured than this.

Going to take weeks? Haven't the 6 months so far been enough then?

There's an example of a centre down her in the Rhondda that was limited to 60 tests per day by the UK Govt because that's all the operator, Serco, could manage. The site has capacity for 400-500 and increased levels as soon as Serco left their contract early. It's hard to work out what's going on, but it seems that even in devolved regions Westminster is able to unilaterally dictate numbers of tests accepted as long as one of their appointed operators is in place. It's all a bit of a mess and clearly not working to capacity.
