Looks like this is getting heavy now too. Sure I read the other day there'd only been 3 previous incidents like this, but now 40 in one day: https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/21/asia/taiwan-china-warplanes-median-line-intl-hnk-

Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

The war drums are beating:

"The video, released on Saturday by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force, shows nuclear-capable H-6 bombers carrying out a simulated attack on what appears to be Andersen Air Force Base on the US Pacific island of Guam."

And here:
https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/36519/yes-the-united-states-did-draw-up-a-

This was also discussed on the Andrew Marr show yesterday.

As if the world didn't have enough prodigious problems to tackle already without the added fear of China and the USA triggering WW3!

Technically, they are two sides in a civil war which has never been concluded. There was a lot of fighting in the 1950s and periodic sabre rattling since, depending upon how far the Taiwanese government of the day inclines towards a formal separation from China.

Certainly up until 2000, while the Kuomintang were still in charge in Taipei, both sides regarded themselves as the legitimate rulers of the the whole of China. The Beijing government still most definitely does. Ironically, the island had been under Japanese control from 1895 until 1945, just four years before the defeated Nationalists (KMT) retreated there.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

There's been more border cashes between India and China - though how much of both are for home consumption as a means of distraction has to be guessed at.

Whatever the purpose, it still amounts to a huge waste of resources, in countries where there is amply need of better housing, healthcare and education in parts of both countries

Taiwan is a useful way for China to poke the USA. Has more to do with it than any real desire to embark upon what would be a very bloody invasion.

yep

I cannot see any advantage for China in any military action, though rattling the cage of the US to induce an increased sense of nationalism in the US might have the intent of trying to keep Trump in power

a man so stupid he can be provoked into an response and action necessary

strange thing politics

Don't think Beijing wants to keep Trump. Despite being occasionally chmmy with Xi Jin Ping himself, he's too keen on trade wars, opposition in the South China Sea and accusing them of spreading the virus. Think this is more intended to cause trouble for him on the international stage. A large number of Americans aren't really very interested in world affairs, too far away.

The H6 is a Chinese copy of the Tu16 (Nato codename "Badger"), an early 1950s first generation jet bomber design. They are subsonic and not stealthy, but do have the capability to carry modern stand-off (cruise-type) missiles, which is their main threat.

Watched this last night, worth a watch. Allegations of hefty bribes being used by the Chinese in order to expand their political influence in the area.

And even though it's called 60 Minutes it's actually only just under 23 minutes in length. Seems like an Australian investigative equivalent to Panorama.
