US election megathread 03:24 - Sep 23 with 138148 viewsSpruceMoose

Seeing as we are approaching the presidential debates, and with the actual election being only 42 days away, maybe we could keep this as a US election megathread for those on here who are interested? One location for all the discussion would prevent multiple threads clogging up the board for those who don't care to get involved?

Personally, the reality of having to experience this election in the near future is stressful AF so if anyone else wants to get stressed together... Jump on board.

Now, insert all the usual caveats about polling here but...it's looking positive that we will be rid of Trump come 2021, much to the disappointment of a couple of posters on here. 538 are well respected in the field of poll analysis so what they announce should be taken seriously.

Of course their analysis doesn't take account of any election fraud, Russian interference, voter suppression etc. But it's positive news none the less. Once Trump is gone, we can work on Johnson. Decent people of the world... Unite!

As with other right wing nut jobs, this one is a congenital liar, as

"In the United Kingdom, a 23-month-old baby named Alfie Evans, born with a degenerative neurological condition, was deemed by the government to be an “inefficient” use of care. Not only did the British government withdraw care, they also prohibited Alfie’s parents from seeking care elsewhere, and he died after four days of being denied food and water."

That claim runs from deliberate misrepresentation to blatant lying, as the link below shows

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfie_Evans_case

Another example of the lies that are used to fill the empty heads of the right in the US, scare stories to dupe this dimwits into believing that their pet care type insurance allows them 'freedom' and the best care health wise. It doesn't. It is a costly shambles.

Odd, some might say, that this nonsense is not used by the US armed services if it is so effective. They go for universal care, based on clinical need, not profiteering greed.

So when you next listen to one of these Republican rednecks spouting shy te, you know where they get it from.

I was watching a documentary about the Tea Party with Andrew Neil from a few years ago, and they interviewed a couple in a Colorado (I think) that said even if they were starving on the streets they wouldn't accept any government assistance. Such a self-defeating mindset.

Any wonder they settle for a third world style health (don't) care system

It is indoctrinated into them from an early age- where their anger is channelled towards others in the same boat, rather than those exploiting them

A truly stupid country in many parts

Liars. Like their hero Rand, when push comes to shove, they always wave the begging bowl at the government.

They have world class health care, the best in the world and if you have insurance you can have access to it. Once your insurance runs out though they will toss you out of the hospital with a drip still in you arm because it costs $500 to remove it and you no longer have insurance. The Hippocratic oath means nothing. Doctors until recently were required to administer or supervise the drugs they use for executions and they care for nothing apart from their own pockets. DO NO HARM! Not in America. It's diabolical.

That is spot on. The care is top notch if you can afford it or have an employer who offers good insurance.

The problem is that so many people who can't afford good quality medical care, or who don't have coverage, have been brainwashed to think that someday their luck will change and they will be able to afford it, or they will land that job that covers it, and when that day comes, they don't want to have to pay a single cent extra to cover the costs of the people who can't afford it or don't have coverage.

It's the same reasoning as why there is so much opposition to taxing the wealthy. So many people who will never, ever, earn more than $30K a year are convinced they'll be impacted by high taxes rates for millionaires at some point in their future.

Honestly, so many of the working class here seem to be more Del Boy than Del Boy. They literally live and die by 'this time next year...'

Superb from Biden campaign. Simple and effective.

My mate has £80 on Trump winning at 6/4. I've been trying to convince im to get out of the bet and every day he sends me screenshots of Trump's odds shortening on Betfair. I really don't get it. What is convincing people he has a chance? All signs suggest he's done. I know it's not certain but 1.7 on Biden and 2.46 on Trump is way closer than I expect the odds to be.

Truly impaired.

I'm not sure the betting markets are a good indicator as to what's happening over here to be honest. I think you've offered good advice for him to get out of the bet.

If he's looking for a fun long shot, tell him to stick his money into Dems winning a senate seat in Alaska or South Carolina.

That's the point about it being ;third world' as it only provides for those wealthy enough to pay.

It's probably one of the most inefficient health care services in the western world.

Having it based on insurance means the hospital has every reason to perform needless procedures (X-rays, scans etc) to make money out of the insurer. Which means money is not only wasted on these procedures, but on endless wrangling between insurers and hospitals, along with costly administration and sales sommission.

Unfortunately if you have ever listened to the dimwits they equate universal health care with something akin to Florence Nightingale in the 19th century, and no understanding of how badly run their shambolic system is,

Numpties in the south even bleat about the dangers of Biden who will introduce socialism (gasp), whereby the shops will be empty and the government will be able to take away their house - something mortgage companies never do, we have to suppose.

I say dimwits, as how difficult is it to check on those countries where social democracy and social justice are in evidence ?

The Scandinavians perhaps ?

Quite. There's a British superiority complex over the US that many hold, and it is entirely undeserved if we consider the disastrous path the UK has gone down these last few years.

I think a large number of the 'not too bright' imagine that what happened in 2016 will happen in 2020 ie Trump coming from behind to win.

However it should be borne in mind that Clinton's lead was about 2% and had been falling, and moving. Whereas Biden has been in the lead for the whole of 2020 with a steady 8 point lead. Up till the past month where it has actually been increasing, now at around 11 points.

States where Trump won in 2016 have gone from favouring him, to marginal and now to favouring Biden. As it stands if all the undecided were to vote Trump he would still lose. If all the marginal states and some favouring Biden were to vote Trump... he would still lose by around 40 seats.

As it stands it is looking like Biden 350, Trump less than 200 - and that is now, never mind the gap continuing to grow.

My point was that Americans are force fed this false ideology so much that they have a term for it.

Apologies if this has already been asked.

Where would Joe Biden seat if he were a British politician? I’d imagine not as left as Corbyn but would he seat quite in the centre-left like New Labour under Blair?

Also, he Biden wins would his politics be friendly to the current Tory administration especially in terms of Brexit?

Thanks.
