US election megathread 03:24 - Sep 23 with 162950 viewsSpruceMoose

Seeing as we are approaching the presidential debates, and with the actual election being only 42 days away, maybe we could keep this as a US election megathread for those on here who are interested? One location for all the discussion would prevent multiple threads clogging up the board for those who don't care to get involved?

Personally, the reality of having to experience this election in the near future is stressful AF so if anyone else wants to get stressed together... Jump on board.

Now, insert all the usual caveats about polling here but...it's looking positive that we will be rid of Trump come 2021, much to the disappointment of a couple of posters on here. 538 are well respected in the field of poll analysis so what they announce should be taken seriously.

Of course their analysis doesn't take account of any election fraud, Russian interference, voter suppression etc. But it's positive news none the less. Once Trump is gone, we can work on Johnson. Decent people of the world... Unite!

I'm in Lake County Florida and mostly vote Trump signs that I've seen in gardens. I would say he's pretty safe here.

I was in upstate NY recently and its Trump signs everywhere up there too. Stuff like that makes me think this 'silent Trump voter' thing is a myth. Trump voters love to tell people they love him!

I actually think the silent vote this time round will come from suburban women and the elderly. They're going to abandon Trump.

We actually had 2 female friends of my partner arrive yesterday from Minnesota for a mid 50s birthday treat. I was actually surprised to discover they are Trump fans!

You would assume the proportion of 'silent' Trump voters will have significantly diminished following the win at the previous election, which will have legitimised being a Trump supporter.

I am not sure about Suburban woman - I coach my daughters soccer team and apart from one, maybe two of the parents then I am sure they are all voting for Trump. They are all white, middle class and haven't been affected by the pandemic so fall into his target audience. On the other hand I play poker with a chap whose grandson is an ardent Trumper (the guy is 98 and fought in Korea) - and the other day he said Trump was the worst president he'd ever had - so there is some hope there

For me, Black, Latino (non Cuban) and the young win this election for Biden

Well, we won't have to wait long to find out now I guess! Polls are showing suburban women breaking 60/40 for Biden right now. It'll be interesting to see if that holds up.

Will you be watching on the night or will you avoid it all until the situation becomes more clear?

I am a massive politics buff so will be watching for sure. I think early in the broadcasts in 2016 we knew that something was going horribly wrong (a bit like the Brexit coverage) - this time I really don't think we'll get much in the way of info until at least the next day - Fox will be showing it one way and CNN the other

This will be my first General Election since moving here. I just missed the last one by a few months, so I will be taking a keen interest too, especially as I can't vote yet.

I was reading earlier that the Florida and Georgia polls close at 7pm and are expected to get through their counts quickly. If Trump wins both I don't think that'll tell us much, but if Biden takes both maybe that'll indicate a bloodbath. Like you say though, we might get a sense of the general picture on the night, but nothing definitive (unless it really is a landslide either way).

We came in 2014 so took in most of the 2016 election without paying a huge amount of attention until the very end. I remember watching the debates with my Dad who was over visiting and we both said that Trump was embarrassing himself & that Clinton was the clear winner of each of them

Having lived here a further years since then I can see exactly how he did win and it wouldn't surprise me if it was a bit closer than people are suggesting. I am sure that before Covid he was a certainty to win. The amount of BS that the American public will listen to is amazing - these people are literally voting for someone that clearly doesn't have any of their interests at heart but just says the right things (Pro life, guns, illegals etc)

The weirdest thing is that had he been capable of controlling himself COVID could have been a huge election year gift for Trump. All he had to do was look presidential, defer to experts, tell people to wear a mask and follow advice. But he couldn't do it. Too petty. Even after he caught the damn virus he still couldn't do it.

Without Covid I reckon he's have been comfortable coming into this election.

Personally I think Covid was a negative for him because he couldn't unite people against it the way he has with other things (Hilary, Mexicans, Muslims, BLM etc) - he is actually not a particularly smart man and has now surrounded himself with people who are not being honest with him - being a narcissist means that he needs to hear how great he is every single day - rather than hearing what he has done wrong

The odds aren't great. I'm not going to be placing any more bets on it. Just going to enjoy the victory for the world.

Actually, Biden is still 1/2 (1.5). If he's those odds on the day then I will almost certainly back him, but I won't be backing anything else.

I know this is a bad thing to say but I wish the polls were a bit closer (with Biden winning). I hope the early stages are blow for blow and it's not a rout. I know that's the wrong thing to be thinking about but I love an American election.

Am just listening to a vox pop on Radio 4.

A woman (in Michigan, I think) saying that she will vote for Trump as he "represents heaven" by being against abortion, same-sex marriage etc. "Trump is doing the work of Our Saviour".

His base is legitimately insane. It's a cult. He doesn't have supporters, he has loyalists, and you're either with them or you're the enemy.

Just look at the rallies he's holding now - They're actually willing to die for him. They're cheering for the kidnapping and murder of a sitting US Governor. How people like Paz and Flimflam can witness all this and think it's great is beyond me.

What they think and say and feel is not based in reality, and I'm really worried about how they'll react next week when reality come crashing through their delusions if Trump loses.

Now a week to go and Trump is improving.

Not that he is getting high poll ratings, but they are no longer falling - which actually point towards him losing.

The average poll ratings for the past week or so have Biden on 52% and Trump on 43% which suggests there are only around 5% who are still undecided.

Even if all of those vote Trump, he still loses on votes. The number crunchers are saying that such a result would give Biden victory,

Si we are where we have been for most if this year. Trump has to not only reclaim seats that he won in 2016 that are now polling against him - but start to make inroads into what are now regarded as safe Biden states.

Yeah it's lovely up there. The rabid people tend to be located in pockets and there's plenty of liberals and old hippies up there to balance things out a bit. Interesting area.
