US election megathread 03:24 - Sep 23 with 162973 views | SpruceMoose | Seeing as we are approaching the presidential debates, and with the actual election being only 42 days away, maybe we could keep this as a US election megathread for those on here who are interested? One location for all the discussion would prevent multiple threads clogging up the board for those who don't care to get involved? Personally, the reality of having to experience this election in the near future is stressful AF so if anyone else wants to get stressed together... Jump on board. Now, insert all the usual caveats about polling here but...it's looking positive that we will be rid of Trump come 2021, much to the disappointment of a couple of posters on here. 538 are well respected in the field of poll analysis so what they announce should be taken seriously. Of course their analysis doesn't take account of any election fraud, Russian interference, voter suppression etc. But it's positive news none the less. Once Trump is gone, we can work on Johnson. Decent people of the world... Unite! https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2020-election-forecast/ [Post edited 23 Sep 2020 3:32]

US election megathread on 11:39 - Oct 28 by SpruceMoose | Yeah it's lovely up there. The rabid people tend to be located in pockets and there's plenty of liberals and old hippies up there to balance things out a bit. Interesting area. |
Yeah, think we found a hippyish bit. What blew me away was how rural and isolated in felt, just a couple of hours out of the big smoke. Good stuff and enjoy! Edit: apologies for the diversion. [Post edited 28 Oct 2020 12:38]

US election megathread on 22:52 - Oct 26 by J2BLUE | The odds aren't great. I'm not going to be placing any more bets on it. Just going to enjoy the victory for the world. Actually, Biden is still 1/2 (1.5). If he's those odds on the day then I will almost certainly back him, but I won't be backing anything else. I know this is a bad thing to say but I wish the polls were a bit closer (with Biden winning). I hope the early stages are blow for blow and it's not a rout. I know that's the wrong thing to be thinking about but I love an American election. |
I’m the same. In my head, if Biden is any bigger than 2/5 on the Monday evening, I’ll be having a good bit on him. Still have that small trump bet (think it was £50 at 7/4) but I can’t see it likely at all. Will be cheering on Biden either way. Have a very important presentation on Tuesday at uni but after that, I’ll be watching the election unfold four years on from the CR7 being formed

Good to see. Also good to see the simulations from 538 have dropped the probability of a Trump victory to 11 in 100. It was up to 15 in 100 after the second debate. Emily Maitlis did compare this to a bag of Revells on Americast. If you're allergic to peanuts, if there is still a 11 to 100 chance of getting a peanut one you'll still be panicking.

The good news keeps on coming. I think Trump knows it. If he's having to go to Nebraska seven days before the election that says his team knows he's in trouble. Let the shady vote tampering begin!

US election megathread on 07:52 - Oct 28 by giant_stow | I spent a week in New York / some upstate area near a ski resort (can't remember the town). We went in Autumn - so beautiful - blew me away. Anyway, carry on... |
That whole NE corner is lovely. We were in Maine for 7 months or so over the summer, autumn and winter a few years back. The Mrs was working and the kids in school there, but I took a career break. We had a couple of small ski resorts within 30-40 minutes drive. One was really nice (Camden Ski Bowl if anyone knows it) so I'd drop the kids off at school at 7.30 (they start early lol), go skiing for the rest of the morning and then have a decent lunch in the ski centre and head back to pick the kids up. Tough life that was . There were larger resorts within a few hours drive. And then over Christmas we drove through a raging blizzard over the border to Quebec City for a look around the city (gorgeous) and yet more skiing. Not that we ski normally, just thought we'd make the most of it. Fkn cold though -25C when we were skiing in Canada. Fall in northern Maine was fantastic. And we nipped down into New Hampshire a few times including a couple of trips to Boston. Didn't get as far as New York, but we didn't need to as there was so much to do further north. NY is a relatively easy long weekend/week from the UK at another time. Maine was superb though. Loads to do and enjoy as long as you like the outdoor life, scenery and don't mind extremes of weather and lots of snow. I'd move there permanently if I could, like a shot.

The whole country is really something in terms of landscape. Wherever you are you can find some genuine wilderness and something unique. It's the people you have to watch out for, although even the most xenophobic patriot never seems to object to the presence of a white English bloke for some reason... For me the Pacific Northwest and their temperate rainforest is my favourite area. Not made it up to Maine yet, but we were discussing it for a post-pandemic roadtrip.

The people are great. We were made so welcome. The family of a school friend of our youngest invited us to theirs for Thanksgiving. I was on crutches (snapped calf showing the lad how to take a ball on the chest, swivel and hammer it into the top corner; don't ask, but it's not good when you're late 40s and haven't kicked a ball for 20 years), but they came to pick us up and treated us like family. We had invites for Halloween, New Year, and most weekends. One of he Mrs wok colleagues took us out to their private island for a long weekend. We were basically never alone. The few neighbours where we were living were really tight knit (helps that they were all creative liberals, a bit of a theme in Maine). It was great. I'm sure there are numpties elsewhere, but we had a fantastic experience with people and the places alike. (Although the confederate flag waving hunters seemed a bit odd).

Americans are like that. Welcoming, friendly, keen to make you happy. That's why this Trumpism is so weird to me. I don't know if you've seen the new Borat film but two QAon fellas put him up for five days, become his mates, help him out with his 'daughter'... but still hate foreigners and think Democrats drink the blood of children and love Trump's racist policies. That's obviously an extreme example but one I've seen myself. Often this dislike of others doesn't include the person standing in front of them. That person is ok, that person is somehow different. It's the unknown foreigner or minority they don't like, not the one they do know.

Hmmm, but it is the Orange ones you really must avoid. You could almost say they are the battenburg of all the small spherical chocolate covered confectionary variations.

We're getting a bit like that here I think after all the demonising of foreigners. There's a significant number of people who seem to show no compassion or humanity when it comes to asylum seekers. The responses to the sad deaths in the channel yesterday are proof enough of that. I haven't seen the Borat film - I'm not sure whether to watch it or not. I may get round to it. Some of it is so close to the bone it makes for uncomfortable viewing imo, especially when the kids are around.

Definitely not one to watch with the kids around. I mean, it's funny, but depressing. I'm sure you know exactly what to expect. Might be more enjoyable after Trump is removed from office.

Don't start me on that. I'm expecting him to get in until he doesn't. No nasty surprises that way, and yes I know all the signs look good. Too good to be true is what I'm worried about.

That's my take. I'm bracing for a disaster next week despite the great polls. I'll be good and drunk and if anything good happens, well, that'll be a pleasant surprise. [Post edited 28 Oct 2020 18:54]

I worry there's a load of bias from the media meaning they only pick up on the pro Biden stories. *When I say bias, I mean as in cos the media recognise what as utter fckwit Trump is, they subconsciously pick up on the news stories that fit their wishes.

Well, to be fair, other than knuckleheaded conspiracy theories there aren't any negative Biden stories to report. Whereas there are more Trump negative stories than you can shake a stick at!

Now, I don’t wish to derail this thread, but, I think Maltesers should be first. There are lots of ways to have chocolate around other chocolate, obviously more usually in some form of cuboid. So having honeycombed goodness wrapped in chocolate has to edge it for me, if only for the novelty value. It really is only crunchies and maltesers that use this combination. Of course the rest of the list is accurate, and I guess since this is a US based thread the position of other such delights like M&Ms should be considered. As long as they are below Minstrels but above Smarties, I am fairly relaxed.

I will consider your appeal. I do have a question though. Are the Maltesers in a pack of Revels the exact same Maltesers that go into a back of Maltesers, or are they knock offs/damaged Maltesers? Basically, what grade Maltesers ends up in a pack of Revels?
