US election megathread 03:24 - Sep 23 with 162954 viewsSpruceMoose

Seeing as we are approaching the presidential debates, and with the actual election being only 42 days away, maybe we could keep this as a US election megathread for those on here who are interested? One location for all the discussion would prevent multiple threads clogging up the board for those who don't care to get involved?

Personally, the reality of having to experience this election in the near future is stressful AF so if anyone else wants to get stressed together... Jump on board.

Now, insert all the usual caveats about polling here but...it's looking positive that we will be rid of Trump come 2021, much to the disappointment of a couple of posters on here. 538 are well respected in the field of poll analysis so what they announce should be taken seriously.

Of course their analysis doesn't take account of any election fraud, Russian interference, voter suppression etc. But it's positive news none the less. Once Trump is gone, we can work on Johnson. Decent people of the world... Unite!

Despite Biden's apparent lead, I'm so worried that Trump might have some scheme to influence some of the Democrat electors to become faithless electors, that I can't get no sleep.

I think he's slowly turning into Trump...

Carlson is only 16/1 to be the GOP nominee in 2024.

Same odds a Michele Obama or Buttigieg for the Democrats.

Back to the point, that it doesn't really matter who the candidate it, it is who the party is for about 43% of the population.

I can see 2024 being another Trump like candidate as they will spend the next 4 years saying the election was stolen from them.

There is this article about 3rd party candidates that the republicans have backed so that undecided/independent voters don't vote for democrats.

I think Tom Cotton will be the crank candidate and Nikki Haley will revert to being a Never-Trumper. If i had to put money on it, I'd go for Paul Ryan winning the nomination though. Since his resignation as speaker, I've been convinced he took the decision to distance himself from the carnage, whilst not speaking out too much, in order to win enough votes from the moderate and right wing factions in the next primaries. He's recently moved back to Washington from Wisconsin as well.

Do you think the limp and insipid Ryan has the presence to impress the new Trumpified GOP? I don't. I think they'll get behind Cotton, and that's terrifying because that man is legitimately evil.

I think that's two of the most interesting questions which will face the Republican party if Trump loses on Tuesday (and it is still an if).

1. Who does the party turn to?
2. What does Trump do.

Suggestions of Paul Ryan probably aren't wide of the mark, he's managed to keep his nose relatively clean and has name recognition. But - does he appeal to the more right-wing factions of the party who have become dominant in the last few years? The choice seems pretty binary, either they go for a never-Trumper and try and rollback from the last 5 years (Haley, Ryan) or they double down and try and find another firebrand candidate.

And what's Trump going to do? His best bet is surely to try and pursue the Trump TV idea he was going to launch before he accidentally won the vote in 2016, to both try and get some money (he is tremendously in debt) and realistically that's the best way to continue to promote his brand. And are his supporters going to feel at home in a post-Trump Republican party? How many of them follow the man rather than party?

Haley would be my guess. Haley vs Harris in 2024 would at least get the issue of gender out of the way.

Jim Jordan has enough crazy about him to make the wild statements like building walls etc to get noticed, but also knows how the system works.

Yep, Cotton is a lunatic and a nasty barsteward to boot. However, whilst I think the ideologically pure faction will be strong come 2024, a Trump defeat will create a bit of damage for their reputations, and allow Ryan to pitch himself between the moderates and the grassroots - not dissimilar from what Starmer has done with Labour.

Ryan's got some pretty dodgy views but I'd have him over Cotton any day.

I feel like Ryan is a clown and and an idiot but he could be dealt with in a somewhat traditional GOP manner. Cotton is just a zealot though

Coming back to this year, Florida is going to be close. A+ rated poll.

I still think Florida will vote for Trump. I'll start a separate thread on Monday or Tuesday specifically for us all to do our map predictions - will be interesting to compare.

I suspect the Republican Party will want to try and 'row back' from Trumps toxic tome in office. With Biden overseeing a more progressive administration the need will be to re-position themselves (Reps) towards the centre, if only that they know that Trumps's lunatic supporters have nowhere else to go.

As to Trump himself I should imagine the next few years will be one of fighting prosecution. The man is a crook, from top to bottom, and unless that is dealt with at the level of a 'Nuremberg' style series of trials the wound will never heal.

He will find himself very much on his own in 2021.

I wonder what it is about the corrupt racist bigot that Farage identifies with?

I find this all very bizarre. This global movement that Farage seems to support across Europe and the US is a bit of a cult isn't it? I don't understand why people sign up to it, but you've got Brits who go full on Trump worshipping. What's that all about? Why slavishly support someone who's running for office in another country when you can have no involvement in that process?

And I would be as confused if they were grovelling at the altar of a Democrat. I liked Obama as a person - from what we saw of his relationships with those around him and his family, he seemed genuine, warm and loving (compare to the Trumps - like the fkn Munsters lol). But I wouldn't have gone on social media, uncritically promoted all his campaign material and defended him to the hilt.

Because they want Trump-lite, at the very least, in the UK. He is someone who is unafraid of speaking out of turn, saying what they privately think, promoting himself as their protector and they want to make it clear that they think this is the way forward and people should stand out and be counted in that regard.

A Trump defeat may let the air out of that particular balloon.

British Trump fans are up there with the weirdest and most awful people going.

David Icke, Russel Grant and Boris Johnson have found it very profitable to pander to the stupidity that exists in this country.

In the US they have very wealthy pastors filling the silly heads of the ignorant with similar nonsense.

It is the same level of stupidity that stops them from seeing through these shysters, that has them wanting to retain someone who expresses their ignorance.

So, whatever these self-appointed messiahs do or say has to be defended, less the gullible be left with no one.

The same level of blind faith and ignorance can be seen in the attacks in France today.

Americans are like that. Welcoming, friendly, keen to make you happy. That's why this Trumpism is so weird to me. I don't know if you've seen the new Borat film but two QAon fellas put him up for five days, become his mates, help him out with his 'daughter'... but still hate foreigners and think Democrats drink the blood of children and love Trump's racist policies.

That's obviously an extreme example but one I've seen myself. Often this dislike of others doesn't include the person standing in front of them. That person is ok, that person is somehow different. It's the unknown foreigner or minority they don't like, not the one they do know.

100% this

As I mentioned, most of the parents of the soccer team I coach are white middle class and pretty much all will vote Trump. Yet they have welcomed myself and my wife (who is Colombian) into their lives with no problem. One of my Assistant Coaches is black and they love him - always saying what a great job he is doing - yet at the same time they come out with all this Pro Trump BS and post it all over Facebook - the 'nicest' of my parents are also the most fervent Trump fans

To be honest I will be glad when this is all over as I have to bite my tongue so much around them

agreed, it will however be a deciding factor in how many Trump loses by

as North Carolina, Ohio and Georgia are also slowly moving from being undecided to leaning toward Biden - these are states Trump needs to win just to finish 40 seats behind Biden

and with only 4 days left it is going to take a monumental shift in voting for Trump to win - whereas in 2016 polls in the last few days, were showing the polls narrowing

here, if anything, they are showing Biden pulling further ahead
