US election megathread 03:24 - Sep 23 with 162984 viewsSpruceMoose

Seeing as we are approaching the presidential debates, and with the actual election being only 42 days away, maybe we could keep this as a US election megathread for those on here who are interested? One location for all the discussion would prevent multiple threads clogging up the board for those who don't care to get involved?

Personally, the reality of having to experience this election in the near future is stressful AF so if anyone else wants to get stressed together... Jump on board.

Now, insert all the usual caveats about polling here but...it's looking positive that we will be rid of Trump come 2021, much to the disappointment of a couple of posters on here. 538 are well respected in the field of poll analysis so what they announce should be taken seriously.

Of course their analysis doesn't take account of any election fraud, Russian interference, voter suppression etc. But it's positive news none the less. Once Trump is gone, we can work on Johnson. Decent people of the world... Unite!

I was thinking more along these lines:

There really is a Simpsons moment for everything.

Kindergarten politics.

The good thing is that the more he rambles on, the more his real self emerges & the more obvious it becomes that he was never fit for office in the first place. In fact he increasingly looks like any ridiculous TWTD troll of the past (name your favourite here) doing a mega-flounce-off

MSNBC cut him off. They said it was dangerous and they couldn't carry it with a clear conscience.

Meanwhile Trump's lead in Georgia slips to 3,635.

That's a huge statement from them.

Just saw the gap had closed - he's done for. Been far too close though, nothing like what was predicted beforehand.

PA to Biden
GA close, could go either way, but my heart says Biden.
NC to Trump.

Just my guess though!

Was wondering what situation was with PA - doesn't need anything else if he gets that, would put him on 273?

I don't think there is a coherent Republican strategy on this. They're off the rails and I think it's all coming directly from Trump, completely ignoring whatever his advisers and the party at large are saying.

Where he's winning he wants votes to stop, where he's losing he wants votes to continue, the whole world is against him. He basically wants this bad feeling called losing to stop and for everyone to say he's won. It's a spoilt brat tantrum and the more extreme he becomes the harder it is going to be to find willing stooges to go out on the news shows to defend him.

You have to think that the Republican party have one eye on the future and are wondering to what extent they want to distance themselves from this lead balloon now before the crap really hits the fan.

ABC and CBS too. Think he clearly overstepped the mark.

...news networks including ABC, CBS and MSNBC stopped broadcasting the president’s remarks — which amounted to a series of un-democratic lies.

I'd class my father in law as a moderate Republican.

He voted Trump in 2016.

We've not discussed it in 2020 for the sake of family relations but it wouldn't surprise me if he voted for him again.

Some Republicans just have their red line issues, be it tax, abortion, gun control etc. that they just won't vote against regardless of who the leader is.

That's just incredible isn't it. Is there no-one to stop his madness? Surely outright lying and provoking of unrest cannot be allowed to happen from the white house?

Even his history has been revised. He had his deeply unpleasant views and moments before finally standing up to Trump when it no longer really cost him anything.

At the end of the day even moderate Republicans sometimes have core beliefs that I genuinely believe are just against human rights.

It's important not to confuse civility for decency.

But don't they get that Trump is different to the others? A danger to the institutions of democracy?

They don't care so long as they get their tax break or semi automatic rifle, or in the most extreme cases the right kind of people are being hurt.

I really don't know how, given Republican policies over the last thirty years, you could vote for them without an empathy deficiency.

In their minds the "radical left" is the only threat to democracy. Anything that keeps them out is saving democracy, no matter how undemocratic.

One of my wife's Facebook "friends" posted this earlier: ‘We sit here wondering if Biden will cripple our nation’s economy. Will racism get worse? Will I, as a Christian be targeted? All the terrible things the left thought Trump would do never occurred, but we see every day how the left continuously attacks the right. It’s a legitimate concern."

They're terrified of this evil-left bogeyman. Its like Hampstead on steroids.

You can only hope that the best way to reach these brainwashed people is to govern in a fashion that comprehensively shows them they're wrong about the left by improving their quality of life, improving their access to affordable healthcare, improving their environment and improving their share in the economy.

A part of me doubts that even all of that would be enough.
