So who's the best driver on here? 14:30 - Sep 28 with 3453 viewsBrixtonBlue

I've been driving just over 14 years and never had an accident. Well, someone reversed into me while I was stationary in a petrol station, but I don't think that really counts.

Guess it depends how much you drive as well. In the early days it was quite a lot, backwards and forwards from uni to digs, digs to work and digs back home to Essex. Not so much these days, although the odd trip to Essex and Birmingham to visit parents.

Crystal Palace to the Lake District is my furthest drive.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

It was the fecking A11.

It was busy as you like and I'm waiting patiently for a gap when some woman who was flying up behind me was staring up the A11 fancying her chances of outrunning a 40ft trailer lorry, if she put her foot down...

The one place she didn't bother to look was in front of her.

She shunted me some 20 feet and almost put me in front of the speeding lorry. I was standing upright on my brakes.

State of my car.

Jesus. What a daft cow.

I reckon on every car journey I make I see someone doing something inexplicably daft.

A really minor one this but can anyone explain it - heading on a motorway (to the Lake District the other week) a driver pulls out from the slow lane in front of me (cutting down my stopping distance, but not too bad, I just back off a bit), then they move out into the fast lane. They stay there for a bit, doing the same speed... then move back in front of me, then back into the slow lane again.

Wasn't dangerous or anything, I just thought, "What are they doing?!"

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

How many accidents have you seen in your rear view mirror? ;-)

You don't drive far do you. That's a pretty short distance. Nothing into Europe?

I've been driving legally for 30 years but all in for 36.
Accidents? A couple but none whilst I was moving or driving.

Was in the passenger seat of an Audi which rolled. It landed back on it's wheels and we all walked out of that one.
Our Volvo XC60 had someone shunted into the front whilst we were stationary. Smashed the front but totalled the Focus. We all walked away.

I drive fast cars a lot of the time. SVR Jags mainly. Have a Prodrive Impreza which is my daily and am looking at a Ferrari or Aston next summer.
I'll also be doing my basic ARDS course sometime next year hopefully getting a race licence after. I want to run something in historic racing.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Not so much dangerous but sounds clueless.

Someone will be along to say it's not the 'fast lane' but an over-taking lane.

Which actually your man there would do well to understand by the sound of it.

If he's not overtaking, then he's no business to be there.

I wouldn't class 280 miles as a short distance but maybe that's just me.

I don't know why anyone wants a fast car when the speed limits don't allow fast speeds.

It seems a waste.

As for me, when doing the taxi driving, it was a comfortable thousand odd miles per average week, so that does place you in a high-risk group. You are exposed to a heck of a lot if you consider over the year and all weathers, times of day and night, etc.

Or in the middle lane either (I was in the process of overtaking during all this and WAS about to go into the slow lane when he came back).

I dunno, maybe he was bored and fancied checking out the fast lane for a bit.

It's not far at all. It may seem a haul compared with a trip to town but it's not far at all.

I've been driving for 40 years.
For the last 25 years I have had...
No speeding convictions
No defective vehicle convictions
No crashes with other vehicles
No driver-only crashes into hedges causing write offs
No Drink Drive convictions
No dangerous driving convictions
No driving without due care and attention convictions
Not been banned from driving

A perfect driver.

I'm outstanding. I was on the motorway the other day and the news warned someone was going the wrong way up the carriageway...not sure why they singled one car out, they were all going the bloody wrong way!

Excuse me, but my hedge drive-through was not a write-off.

It was in a Volvo 343 and that thing could have survived an atomic blast.

I had a lime green Capri. Beautiful car.

I loved the old Fords like your Cortina etc.

I had a Cortina Mk 5 in diamond white, smoked glass windows...

Wrapped it around a feck-off lamp post on the slip road leading to the A14 when they were building Whitehouse Asda.

A guy from work hit the same lampost twice.
Company car so no probs.

You didn't mention it but surely the diamond white Cortina MkV had a go-faster stripe.

Absolutely not.

This was no Mk3, this was a classy looking motor I'll have you know.

I was a bit pissed off as someone had offered me a grand for it the week before. Being 1985, that was a fair price.

Had electric windows and everything.

Shut the front door.
Lecky windows in 1985!!!
Had to wait till my Ford Focus in 1999 for lecky windows.

I'd always bought second-hand cars until the Focus and my last 5 cars before that I was the last owner. £300 and 6 months driving before it failed the MOT meant it was pretty cheap motoring and I got to experience a whole range of cars. I had about 15 different cars up to 1999.

Just had a quick peek online and there's some rather tatty looking old Cortinas up for thousands of pounds.

I have only ever been hit by something else although that might take Einstein's theory of relativity to justify in more than one instance.

I would like to think I am a better driver for all my experience and having got over the rashness of youth. However, I also think we all believe we are better drivers than we actually are. There have been a few times I have realised I have got away with something shortly after I did it and a few where I have realised I hadn't too!

They would be over 25 years old wouldn't they?
I loved Cortinas because you could do all your own maintenance.
Plenty of room under the bonnet to get your hands around any part.

I wouldn't go for an old Ford if I wanted to do a restoration.
It would be a Ciroten DS, a car I have only been a passenger in.
It's the coolest car ever.

I drive a motorbike, white van and car so I must be the best. I can see things from all perspectives.

Not caused any accidents but have been totalled four times in 35 years.

Sleeping driver
Herd of deer. Which is horrid as im veggie. (bloody four legged meat machines)
Lady driving accross a 't' junction despite there being only a field opposite.

"Not caused any accidents" so you were driving at an appropriate speed when the herd of deer all suddenly rushed into the road out of nowhere?

No reference to anyone in particular but there aint half some competitive willy-waving going on in this thread! 😂

Not claiming to be any better than anyone else, had some minor bumps and a bad skid on wet leaves (no ABS on landrover) going down a notoriously dodgy steep bank, single track lane with S bends, went into a van's front wing, no one injured thankfully.

Worst one into me was going slowly down slip road to get onto A1 at Doncaster; workmen had just finished so the road ahead was completely clear, but they waved at me to wait while they finished collecting cones. The driver of the 40 ton lorry behind me was obviously expecting me to pull out into the clear road, so accelerated and went straight into back of me. Luckily spare tyre was on back door and my dog not inside, otherwise I don't think I'd be posting this now. As it was, needed new back door, 2 new wings, light units & was picking glass out of the inside for months afterwards.

Deer do that.

I've had one land in front of me from nowhere and I was driving in heavy snow at under 20mph.

Either run across the fields and leaping hedges, or they stand at the side of the road and the lights spook them and they panic.

I know a bloke who had one land on his bonnet smashing the windscreen and near as dammit was inside the vehicle.

Yes, I have hit one (on its own that rushed out from a long verge) but it didn't write my car off. I have also come round a corner and found a roe deer on the verge and spooked it but never been surprised by a herd when doing an appropriate speed. I would suggest that if he wrote his car off he probably wasn't doing an appropriate speed for the conditions.
