"In 1066, which king was beaten at the Battle of Hastings?"

"Erm, I should know this, I like history. No, I'll pass."

"Yes, I studied History A Level - It's Edward the Confesser."

*back to first contestant* "Is that what you would have said?"

"Well, no, I think it's Richard."

That's terrible though isn't it?

I thought she'll know this, nice easy one that most children know all day long, so when she passed I figured she's thrown this away.

And he came out with that.

The poster above is right; it does wonders for your own confidence.

They were all wrong though, or was that your point?

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

I might start watching for a confidence boost. It is indeed a terrible thought. To be honest the amount of people willing to celebrate British history without a basic understanding of it is pretty shocking. Perhaps a basic history test before you can join Laurence,s new heritage party could be amusing enough

You're talking about two contestants though? Maybe I don't understand the game.

The one who passed and then said Richard was pretty bad, the confident one with an A-Level in History is slightly worse.

Yes it was down to two of them. It was her question but she wasn't sure so chose to pass it.

He then said Edward, after stating he had studied it at A Level, (how Ben Sheppard kept a straight face heck knows), but just out of interest before giving them the actual answer Ben asks her what she would have said if forced.

Hence "Richard". I mean not even any particular Richard, not that it would matter of course, but I just don't know why some people fancy their chances on these things.

It's like the contestants who go onto The Chase and just pass everything in sheer panic, or ignorance.

I remember Asa going on there and he said there were 3 stages to go through before being allowed as a contestant, I think. Do they let a few idiots through deliberately for fun?

I think that is a question on the Citizenship test.

Hopefully Priti wasn’t watching, they may get sent to the deportation centre in Tower Hamlets.

That's not what I meant! As you know.

Asa did ok as it goes. He got through didn't he.

Certainly didn't embarrass himself from what I recall anyway.

The king involved was unlucky.

Awful planning by UEFA to make him play Chelsea just a few days before that second match

Typical, bloody EU fixing it so we lose out!

Before you can actually answer the question, you need to understand early mediaeval notions of kingship.

So the answer has to start with 'well, it depends what you mean by 'king.'.
