By not going for a 'circuit breaker' about now (as the scientists advised last month), he'll ending being forced to announce one at Christmas?

The point is we're only just marginally better than the USA for deaths per million, and their sh!tshow is run by the orange guy who has spent most of the past 6 months telling his people that covid is no big deal and suggesting injecting bleach is a good idea.

Italy are doing better than us and they were swamped with it early doors before anybody knew what was going on, not to mention having a significantly older and more vulnerable population and being connected to mainland Europe.

Agreed but if you were able to look at the death rate since June we would no doubt appear to be doing a lot better.

In the early months when we sacrificed care homes to protect the NHS. Would imagine in the first three months we were probably in the top 3, along with Belgium and Italy. The overall US figures are screwed by the terrible results from New York and neighboring New England states.

Will he though?

Covid is a global problem not a national one, nor a local one. We have already seen that a national 'lockdown' in the UK sense is near to pointless as it locks down nothing.... so a weakened version of the same will by definition be weaker, even if the population at large followed the advice, which they no longer do.

Even uppity local mayors of all political persuasion agree that a local approach - with local resources replacing and adding to the non-functional test and trace is the best way forward... and this is before NI, Wales and Scotland all go their own way anway,

It's a ditherer's paradise.... he'll be damned (or praised) if he does anddamned or praised if he doesnt. The 'circuit breaker' which by definition does nothing to solve the problem is a theoretical tool which only works if the stats behind it are good (which they aren't) and the great British public do what they are told (which they don't).

I think he knows full well that a circuit breaker is inevitable but he want to delay it as much as possible to ensure that any benefit is seen in the run up to Christmas.

He knows it will be electoral suicide if families can't meet over Christmas.

Spot on

Locking down over Christmas is pointless. People won’t stick to it – and at best if you have a rule of 6 like now those that do will still meet up with the same number of people just in smaller groups so you may aswell allow larger gatherings

The only options therefore are to relax the restrictions or to completely ban any multi-household gatherings and have the police seriously enforcing it (ie. going round door knocking) - the latter being electoral suicide as you state (and probably COVID compliance suicide too if we’re honest)

Relaxing restrictions for household gatherings over Xmas is inevitable - and as I posted on here the other day it’s nailed on that it’s announced closer to the time when the biggest opportunity for a Boris saves Christmas PR piece exists
