No doubt, although there’s a very cunning tiny range of 35-50 in the middle marked by relatively few ‘orange’ areas on the map, so that the next ranges up are more distinct deep reds when in many cases they are much higher in terms of the rates.

Was over in the Harz mountains a couple of weeks ago for a few days. Things I observed ref Covid.

1. Every stop for coffee, every meal in a restuatant we were required to give contact details. This was accompanied with the news that giving false details could result in 10k Euro fine.

2. Restuarants had limits on numbers and stuck to them. Tables were left empty even if it meant turning away punters.

3. Upon entering a garage to pay for petrol, if a face covering only covered your mouth and not face, the staff would immediately and politely request it was pulled up. I saw Germans sent back to their cars if they forgot their coverings.

Having said all that, Germans were out and about, socialising in bars and restuarants. They were not under strict lockdown where I was, albeit different states had different rules. I saw no evidence of enforcement as it was largely self policing.

That said, I know Berlin has seen significant resistance, protests and violence so it would be wrong to position the german people as completely compliant, but on the whole, they were way more compliant than we are in the uk around the areas I witnessed.

I suppose, as well, the non-German data suffers somewhat from the fact that it covers greater geographical areas than the German datasets, which seem to be set at Landkreis level.

The UK areas almost look as if they cover the old European Parliament constituencies?

I believe this is doable if people comply with the basics, I really do.

Which is why I get fed up of hearing the same whiny types doing as they please, ignoring the basics and then complaining when we have more stringent measures forced upon us.

Mask wearing needs to be absolutely enforced in all public indoor spaces.

Pubs/restaurants should be checked by the authorities, but hopefully with advice in mind rather than just a punitive approach, at least until an establishment fails in its duties.

We really shouldn't be facing this by now; we've had long enough to start getting our collective heads around this.

We should be actively going after the virus, by that I mean cleaning public spaces. Seriously, how many times do you see anyone representing the local council out spraying bus shelters, benches, bins, anything people touch?

In the long run common sense you'd think would prevail, but there's not much on show at all apart from on the TV screens each day. Actively in the streets, there's nothing.

Yes generally it is down to people to use common sense, but as we have seen the British public consists of a lot of idiots who continue to not follow the main principle of avoiding the spread of the virus.

I think the country needs a reset, the authorities have been given power to issue fines but they don't seem to want to do it. I was on the train yesterday and over the tannoy there were numerous announcements about having a face covering. Yet staff just walked past passengers who sat there without one.

To reset the mindset, the authorities across the country should clamp down over one weekend, fine anyone and everyone who is not complying with the rules the full £10k - short sharp shock. Suddenly a lot of people who are complacent would rethink when hit in the pocket. Of course this would not work for everyone but would show we are not messing about.

And then hopefully we can rely on people self policing themselves a little more.

That wouldn't really influence the visualisation of per capita rates of infection too much though.

The problem is though that there are so many people who haven't had it or know people who have had it and after six months are beginning to wonder if this is all going a bit too far. Even the death figures don't make sense. I'm not saying it's right I'm just saying that's the way it is. I try and play by the rules as best I can as I'm 54 so no spring chicken but the virus doesn't scare me and I go out and about as much as I can. If the government said tomorrow that everyone could do what they want I wouldn't be uncomfortable with that . Having said all that I will/am doing what I'm required to do. Am I complacent, maybe, but I'm just trying to be honest .

Oh as I've said myself, I agree 100%. People are generally selfish ****s.

But I do still feel there's not enough leading by example on just about every level thinkable.

Supermarkets: Went to a Morrisons a couple of weeks back and outside there was a lad spraying the trolley area.

Outside the store was a one-way system in place with separate dispensers for hands and for wiping the trolly handles- with paper towels.

Went to a Tesco the same week; Nothing outside at all except a dried up empty dispenser.

The only one working was inside the store which the punters encounter after they had collected a trolley.

In other words, if there is little effort on show, the attitude will be as infectious as the disease.

My point is if everything was run properly then there shouldn't be too much of a problem.

It's not about fear, it's about common sense and a pragmatic approach.

Absolutely we need people to lead from the front, and the vast majority of our leaders have shot themselves in the foot time and again.

Supermarkets are interesting as since July, mine seem almost back to normal. Apart from having to wear a mask, no more queuing outside, no more limiting numbers just a free for all. I feel sorry for the staff who have to sit on the till all day and must come across hundreds of people.

If you are doing what you are required to do; mask wearing, hand washing / sterilizing, social distancing then that's not being complacent.

Change your statement "the virus doesn't scare me" because it's a killer, it should scare you, to "catching the virus doesn't scare me" as you are taking the correct measures to avoid catching it, don't catch and you don't get ill or die.

All sorts of people are providing all sorts of data during this and I’ve never found myself looking at stuff like this so closely before. This is quite moderate really, the basic message is correct but it does rather make everyone else look like they’re drowning in comparison (just at the point it’s on the rise in Germany). Interestingly Sweden gets largely excluded, wonder what the whole country looks like?

Interesting. Presumably, as you were warned about giving false details, they were not relying on a fancy app but using pen and paper.

If we were as efficient as our German cousins we wouldn’t be relying on an app either. Think we all know that the app is a complete waste of time and money. Macron, when he announced their proper curfew, made mention of working on a new App so theirs presumably isn’t working either.

All an app could ever do is identify people we have had casual , or indirect, contact with.

It made the news as the fine was introduced when we were there. Was all paper and pen where we were, didnt notice apps being used but was not really paying attention to other people tbh.

The other thing that may be of interest was there was a smoky pub in our village. We initially thought it was just a pub where no one cared about the smoking ban but it actually had a licence, on the wall, so it was 100% legal. Which once again shows how our interpretation / implementation of EU law was inconsistent with others' implementation.

I was surprised, in Wakefield, a few years ago. At closing time we were approached by Landlord and told it was smoke in night and we were welcome to stay if we wanted to. We were staying at Hotel opposite.

The German way is better. While I stopped smoking, before I was legally old enough to have started, I have no objections to smoking in pubs, think a room should be set aside for that purpose.
