Laptop Advice 11:59 - Oct 22 with 1690 viewsm14_blue

Sorry, not the most gripping topic but I know we have some IT experts on here and could do with some advice.

Need a new laptop, don't have all that much to spend (<£500) and no idea where to start.

Needs to be windows and will primarily be used for simple web browsing and Microsoft office type work.

Any help much appreciated!

Try PC Specialist.

Excellent build quality. You can choose to configure your own (they'll tell you if what you want won't work), or buy an off-the-shelf model.

Best of all, not pre-loaded rubbish programs.

Agreed, PC Specialist are very good and definitely an option here.

Change the following options from default:
Memory (RAM) - 8GB Corsair 2400MHz.
1st M.2 SSD Drive - 256GB ADATA SU800 M.2 2280
Anti Virus - NO ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE (You don't need it)
Browser - Pick whichever you usually use.
Warranty - Silver

That brings you to ~£500.

This Acer is decent as well:

Out of interest - does it really need to be windows? If you are basically doing office work and web browsing, then you could probably get by with a chromebook. They are getting better and better all the time ( and I think I saw something that was allowing them to run windows apps now too).

Not as a main machine, but I recently got a Lenovo Duet, which is a tablet, with a detachable keyboard. It's really good.... but I would also consider Acer and Asus, who have got good budget ones.

Not sure really, it's for the wife mostly who uses it for a lot of work (she's a teacher).

Have had a chromebook in the past and it was great for browsing but not so good for the work stuff, that was good few years ago though.

I'll check it out, thanks.

I've got 2 configurations on mine - one as a home machine, but I can also do pretty much everything that I do at work on it ( most of that is web based to be fair), but I've also got a linux dev environment on it.

I do know that some teaching aids ( smart screens etc) sometimes only have support for windows, but also chromebooks are massive in the education sector, as they are inherently secure compared to windows, low cost and awesome battery life.

By the way - is that Manchester m14? hope you're avoiding all the covid ridden students :-)

It sure is, although I've moved on since then. We were in the rougher part of M14 too, more gangs and less students.....

Certainly not a patch on Sale.

Still in the plague ridden NW though!

Not Laptop choice advice, but does your wife’s employer not provide a device for working at home? May be worth asking the question

You're kidding aren't you, she's a teacher, most of the time she has to buy her own books and stationery!

Both my wife & I are teachers as well; we both have devices provided by our schools, as do the other teachers. Same in my previous school as well. Might be worth asking the question. These are all state schools.

No way, that's really interesting, I'm astonished.

Will certainly get her to ask.
