"Look at the f**king Pakis. They came here, opened shops, worked hard, sent their kids to University"

I actually let it go, given that the guy was highlighting how hard Pakistani migrants had worked to integrate.

So TWTD - right or wrong call on my part?

Poll: This new lockdown poll - what you reckon?

He just used it as how he described Asians. Bare in mind that was consistent with the guy he was arguing against.

I like the idea (Spruce?) of saying something next time I see him.

“ Good point well made, but I think British people with an Indian and Pakistan heritage may prefer the term British Asian nowadays though, you don’t want people to think you are like that knob head”

Depending on the size and number of friends the knob head had, you could have decided to intercede during the argument with such knowledge, or waited a suitable amount of time to pass.

Heart's maybe in the right place, but could also be playing the 'good immigrant' card to play one group off against another.

Back when I was a lad a common refrain was along the lines of 'Oh, I'm fine with the blacks, but I don't trust the p*kis, they're just Not Like Us'.

As a previous poster said they are using that word you stated very loosely to describe someone of Asian descent, most commonly used by skin heads in the late 60's early 70's. I would prefer people not use the words full stop. There are still people that use another term to get their Chinese take a way, and yes I would call them out for that as well. When are people going to learn that the people you describe are almost certainly born here and are English/British and their appearance should not be held against them. I have had arguments with idiots all my working life with people that have bigoted views about people of different heritage. I honestly thought we were making good strides in this country and especially within Ipswich in general. Education it seems is going to take a lot longer and I worry it won't happen in my lifetime. Maybe we should start on this forum and try to be nice to each other and if there is the slightest hint of racism the comments should be removed immediately. Shouting people down obviously does not work, direct action is needed.

Why?

The whole characterisation is pretty dodgy even while being sort of positive too. But I get your point. I’d also probably realise that it’s an uphill battle trying to get this guy to understand what was wrong about it.

After all, it wasn’t that long ago what seemed like an entire stadium of England fans sang “I’d rather be a P*ki than a Turk”. And that got very little criticism or notoriety since.

Pronouns: He/Him

I think if you pressed jaykay on this matter and got him to accept that the person had Pakistani origin then it would become a question of which part of Pakistan teh family originated from...

As a North Island New Zealand once said to me as I was trying to make conversation by saying that I once knew a girl from Timaru (on the South Island) 'Jeez, she might as well have come from Australia'.

It may well have been a Kenyan so perhaps those nuances are the way to correct the language rather than head on in this instance.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
