Get prepared for Schools and Uni's to be closed as well on 16:40 - Nov 2 by JamestownPrince | Hi Mullet, I hope that you are well In the week before half term, we had 7 staff off (either positive or self isolating in a school of 800 pupils) so 2 year groups had 3 extra days at home with online work - that was before a group of year 11 and 12 kids went home due to positives. I was one of 4 off today (and another one of us spent his 10 days of half term in the house positive...) Thankfully apart from no taste and smell and breathing I am fine so will be going back Thursday. |
Thanks mate, I have the weediest of coughs and typical viral symptoms but no temperature after a few days of feeling chills etc, so no idea if I have/had it and messed my test up or am just ill. But I was in close contact with a confirmed case so have to stay off regardless. Weirdly the app didn't change my isolation when a negative test was put in either. We've had half a year or more off at once, several staff (I feel guilty as some have had to cover me this week despite us doing cover already) in a school of 1000+ It's been a bit farcical at tiems watching the kids all mix outside and then come in but we are doing everything we can, it just feels like fighting the tide some days. Hopefully you'll be back for good after this period off!

Yes, this didn't make much sense to me. Obviously the prevalence of the virus may get to such a high rate that primary and high schools have to restrict access to children of key workers, or reduce the number of days children go in because of teachers self-isolating or ill, but I can't see the government doing that willingly, and they would only do it after giving time for these current measures to have an impact, so the earliest would be in about 3 weeks.

I think this is probably pretty close, they will pull the schools out two weeks early so they’ve a month away in total, they can’t do their nativities, concerts, parties etc anyway.

It shouldn't be that type of call. The rates lag activity by 10-14 days (or more when reporting lag is factored in). If they make decisions about the effectiveness of the lockdown in the first week of December they really are thicker than we thought. I suspect that's why Johnson was prepared to say to the Commons today that it would definitely be ending on 2nd December. We'll only know how effective it was by about mid-December at the earliest. That doesn't give the Government enough time to put in another lockdown before Christmas (based on the month it took them to act this time), even if things are really bad. A New Year lockdown may be in the offing, but nothing before that I'd have thought.

That isn't correct...most courses at most universities have had no face to face teaching. I do not count a university as open because it offers science students one hour a week in a lab and tells all other students to stay in their rooms and view prerecorded lectures and have no live interaction with their tutors. £300 a week for that and £150 a week to sit in a flat which they're forced to pay for even if they now don't need to be there? It's disgusting... | | | | Login to get fewer ads

But pretty much all the transmission at universities is between students sharing accommodation, so cancelling the few bits of face to face teaching still happening here and there won't make a shred of difference to transmissions risk. Getting students back on campus was an act of gross malfeasance and stupidity on behalf of the university sector and the government, but closing face to face teaching now will be entirely irrelevant to the path of the pandemic.

do you have evidence that on average the transmission amongst students is higher than transmission amongst the same age group nationally. that's on average - not anecdotal examples of specific outbreaks. there are certainly universities where the incidence is far far lower than amongst the same age group nationally. where i am we test everyone weekly and we have a current incidence of 0.7%

Certainly not at a national level, but the outbreaks in the worst hit student halls at my university saw peaks of up to about 30% of a hall population testing positive in a week. There's aren't many other areas of society that have come close to that level of prevalence except for some meat packing plants and healthcare settings. Other universities have pretty much got away with it too, though.

There was mention of closing Unis on Dec 8th a while back. If they get their act together it can allow for a staggered return over the next few weeks. I will have to drive from Suffolk to Portsmouth at some point to get Child2. He only has 3 hours a week face to face and that isn't even mandatory.

there's not much evidence of transmission from university students to wider society - they are different from school kids who go home at night. you can have big numbers amongst students without it necessarily spreading wider. the view of public health (here at least) is that uni students, because they are in an organised community, have hugely higher compliance with isolating etc than the general public. here we have close to 100% compliance while the public health people quote some astonishingly low percentage for the general population.

Get prepared for Schools and Uni's to be closed as well on 18:10 - Nov 3 with 1312 views | stopmoaning | Schools have had a four tier system for a while now, but haven’t been told to go into any of those tiers starting Thursday. FYI the tiers are no closures, 2 weeks on and off, most secondary sent home, all closed.

I wouldn't be surprised. We've been through all this in Wales already, and I don't think there was a push from the scientific advisors to shut the schools. I could be wrong, but I haven't seen anything made of it.
