As the commentator said yesterday during the game it's no good playing all that possession football if there is no end result. He was referring to the first half when we were doing our usual tapping it around at the back. It doesn't hurt sides, and Pompey were just sitting back letting us do it. Most games this season there is no creativity, there is no change of pace, no urgency. We very rarely play positively for more than 20-30 minutes a game. In no game yet this season have l seen us dominate. In fact in a lot of the games the opposition have done most of the dominating. I can only see this season panning out the same as last unless we start attacking more and looking more threatening in general. Trouble is, l dont think we have the players who can do that.

Whilst I agree to a large extent, it also takes a long, long while to get a team used to possession football and instinctively looking to play an effective pass rather than lumping it aimlessly forward when under pressure.

From what I can see a lot of our players have improved in their ability to do this, and they have in patches done it in a more attacking sense too. So while I think we've made some laudable and necessary technical progress, they have to be brave enough now to trust that they can dominate games playing this way through the midfield and higher up the pitch.

They've got to push on now and get into that position where they are dominating games, scaring the opposition, and expecting to win every game, because it has to result in promotion this season.

Nolan and Huws didn’t really make themselves available to receive the ball, in the first half in particular.

We missed young Dozzell.

If Nolan receives the ball from the centre half he promptly gives it back again anyway. He must be a leading contender for 'passing backwards champion of the year'.

Yes, I can only see those two as stand-ins really, but on the plus side McGavin looked full of promise to me; forward thinking, sharp, and awkward to handle, and he noticeably grew in confidence as the game went on. Great set piece delivery too.

Would have to be Bishop/McGavin/Nolan for Shrewsbury and Hull, then Dozzell back in for Nolan, then (hopefully sometime?) Downes in for McGavin. Assuming of course that McGavin can keep that up which may be a naive assumption!

Dozzell is eligible for Tuesday’s game perhaps it could b3 arranged for Nolan and Huws to sit and watch. A sort of masterclass.

Although on the flipside under Mick when our possession stats were around 30% fans moaned the reason we didn't win games was because we didn't have enough possession.

I've always thought stats like possession are pointless I prefer the Sir Alex approach of the only stat which counts is goals scored by you is higher than goals conceded. I genuinely believe fans dont care how you achieve that, tip-top, hoof it's irrelevant if the club is constantly winning fans are happy

This....... Nolan is so negative in his passing. Even my Mrs who knows nothing about football sat watching and said, who is he? He does nothing with the ball. I thought that was very telling.

I think we have the players but not the manager.

If PL can get the team to up their game in 2nd half why can't he do that from the start! It's only PL that calls the tune. We clearly have good enough players just poor direction which Matt focused on. He's unlikely to want the job (cushy job at BBC) but think Butcher/Dyer/Nash/Burley combo would be better whichever 2 replaced the current two.
