I'm the world's biggest optimist but I still think it's wise to be cautious.

They've spent decades trying to perfect a vaccine for "ordinary" 'flu, which is also a coronavirus. They haven't managed it yet due to mutations. Tens of thousands (incl me) caught flu last winter despite having had the standard flu jab.

I posted a couple of weeks ago re an interview with a Prof (can't remember his name but Gordon endorsed him) who said, basically, that more effective treatment was more likely to be a way out of the pandemic than an effective vaccine - compared it with effective treatments for HIV - for which there's still no working vaccine.

Ordinary flu is not caused by any of the coronavirus family but by influenza virus, that is why it is called flu. About 10 percent of colds are caused by a mild coronavirus. From what I gather these are the heavy colds with symptoms similar to flu without the high temperatures.

To be fair, as much as I dislike the Tories, they've done brilliantly to get 40m doses. 10m doses by Christmas if it gets final approval would be amazing.

This is one where we have to give them some reluctant credit.

2 doses, 28 days apart.

So the numbers are halved, but it means we can get some key workers vaccinated this year (hopefully).

Pfizer have said they can produce 1.3bn doses next year and you'd hope (maybe naively) that they share this with other production facilities to expedite production

Bearing in mind their previous catastrophic cock-ups, I'm going to reserve judgement until it's all successfully done & dusted 🤞🏼

The proof of the pudding is in the eating & all that :)

Just read you link and then went to Facebook: the first thread I saw was about this (in a local walthamstow group). Most comments by far were along the lines of "no thanks", "no way am i touching that", or "they made it too quickly to be safe"! Even including one from a bloke who says he has asthma.

I mean, wtf?

Edit: the most dpressing comment yet:

"3 people I know have died from it .where my partner works, one has it , his daughter is in a coma and his mum died .
I still wouldn’t get it "

I think the key point to take away from this is that it's folly to be in a Walthamstow FB group.

One could take it further and say it's folly to be in any FB group.

On a per capita basis, 40m doses to the UK is more than 200m to the EU with a population of 450m. We have sufficient stock for everyone over the age of 50 to get one from this tranche, or 2 for everyone over the age of 65. Knowing how this virus operates and who it's especially dangerous to it feels like we've done well, on paper, to secure them.

I'll reserve judgement until we've demonstrated we can roll it out safely and effectively though. Logistics doesn't seem to be our strong point.

Knowing our Goverment, we've secured a Covid18 vaccine at a discount.

Worth remembering any dose figure needs to be halved as it takes 2 doses over 28 days.

Not so, please don't throw babies out with the bathwater - that's also spreading unhelpful misinfomation

The various regional anti-fracking fb groups have been invaluable in helping block the march of the global oil & gas corps from spreading their potentially catastrophic (for both environment and local communities) mining; and the various dog breed & health groups are both great fun & a source of excellent information & advice. No doubt there are many other closed groups which are just as sound, useful & valuable.

Lol. We've probably been scammed by Pfizer like one of those dodgy Ebay listings you read about when someone thinks they're buying a chair and it's actually an image of a chair.

There's 20m people over the age of 55 in the UK. Even if all these vaccines go to that cohort (2 each) that's an enormous win given how statistically insignificant the risk is to younger people.

I'm sure it'll be more nuanced than that, going to those with underlying health conditions but the fact remains if you took the 20m most at risk of the UK population, that's a massive win.

Wow. It wasn't entirely serious for starters but that's a totally out of proportion response. Misinformation! You need to get some perspective if that's what you call "misinformation" given everything we see in the world on a daily basis.

Yes, great news concerning the vaccine.

However concern about logistics. this vaccine needs storage at -80C

Many more fridges will need to be manufactured and may only be available in large hospitals.

Country patients will need to travel to receive their shots.

Also cost price is about 20$ so retail mark-up will be 50% + VAT

You said apparently perfectly seriously "One could take it further and say it's folly to be in any FB group."

Tens of thousands of people get sound support and good information from facebook groups every day. Like all else on social media, it depends how they're used and who you follow. Absolutely sick of it being completely rubbished on here on a regular basis, because doing that is to perpetuate misinformation unhelpfully, yes.

Issues of privacy with fb are certainly a concern & mean I'm now more careful & use it less, but that's a different argument.

I think you've read what you wanted to read and then flown off the deep end. In no way was it "misinformation".

I certainly don't want an argument about it.
