In June 1942, Japan had seized the remote, sparsely inhabited islands of Attu and Kiska, in the Aleutian Islands. ... It's also possible the Japanese believed holding the two islands could prevent the U.S. from invading Japan via the Aleutians. Either way, the Japanese occupation was a blow to American morale.

I was going to go with the Third Punic War 149BC–146 BC, but I thought that might be a little too lively a topic.

I think so. It was in the early days of the Reich, when they were still doing the Burlesque stuff. Didn't they have a campaign decoration in the form of a necklace for that one?

I’ve sailed up through Unimak Passage.

We sail up via the Aleutians to avoid bad weather in the North Pacific.

Generally you get deep lows develop off Japan that then head across the Pacific.

It’s a captivating place!

Are you sure

As I think you will find it was Poole harbour they attacked, trying to kill Lord Bathing-Towel who had formed Lovats scouts and had a camp on Brownsea Island (in the harbour)

I quite liked the look of the one on the left.

No, not the far left, the one just a bit off-centre.

Only thing I know is that the Allies took about 300 casualties liberating the last island, despite the fact they Japanese had already evacuated everyone. Some were from booby traps, etc... but I believe the biggest killer was friendly fire.

Yea, a lot can be said about that one, its ummmm...yea surrounded by water and stuff, but errrr, yea that other one, a bit further over, just seems, more traditionally islandy.

You can definitely see what all the fuss was about though.

Also, there was the occasion when US naval vessels spent some time bombarding what turned out to be false radar echoes.
