Yep, this has been talked about on trade & tariffs Twitter quite a bit over the last few months. I don't understand the half of it, but it seems that with a deal we're pretty screwed and without a deal we're really screwed.

Many products will become more expensive, and for a time, it is likely some products produced in Europe will be in short supply. Those that enjoy wine will have a shock for European produced wines. I will actually be having to do the Customs entries, and we have been told very little so far. It's going to be manic.

Not so. Everything will be cheaper. They told us so during the referendum campaign. You can rest assured.

They need us more than we need them. Hell, stuff will be practically free.

I read a thing the other day (think it was The Independent) and it demonstrated that many imports from outside the EU that are heading to us stop off at distribution centres on the continent before coming here - would we then pay EU tariffs anyway?!

Those things will get routed through Norway now, that will make them really, really inexpensive...

It is more if. what trade deal do we have with that country. If it is one as an EU member then that ends on 31st December so those goods will fall under WTO rules, which are far more onerous....... until the UK can strike a trade deal with that country. And the really important part of trading under WTO rules seems to be being ignored "It's important to remember that the WTO's "most favoured nation" rules limit room for manoeuvre in the event of no deal. The UK couldn't for example lower tariffs for the EU alone, in order to keep trade going. It would have to treat the rest of the world in the same way, which could lead to cheap imports flooding the UK economy, and harming domestic businesses. And it's not just about the tariffs - there are also what are called "non-tariff barriers". In many areas of the economy they are far more important. Non-tariff barriers include things like product standards, safety regulations and sanitary checks on food and animals. Some of them will apply with or without a deal, but businesses that trade with Europe fear that no deal in particular could lead to lengthy delays." This supposedly glorious leap forward into freedom that the Brexit sheep endlessly bleat about would actually be far more restrictive, as 'The UK couldn't for example lower tariffs for the EU alone, in order to keep trade going. It would have to treat the rest of the world in the same way' With the chaos of 4m extra customs forms after 31st Dec for the EU, will also come the costly expense of dealing with all the new tariffs and regulations that leaving the EU will now impose on non EU countries the UK trades with.
