Wow, that is shocking. And to think of the thousands of libraries which also needlessly closed their doors as well. Well done, Mr Rashford. I hope there's some way we can donate to this.

It's like reliving the Victorian era in the 21st century. People will be demanding the return of the workhouse next.

Well, it upsets me that charity is nowadays expected to fill the gaps that government could and should be responsible for filling (and ensuring don’t exist in the first place). I’m really not quite sure when or why homelessness, poverty and even food became a voluntary issue for all of us. But that’s nothing Rashford can resolve but this is. So good on him. And perhaps he’s pricking people’s conscience while doing it, which might eventually filter through to the human side of politicians and the media.

It's a sobering thought that the last vestiges of workhouses - Resettlement Units and Re-establishment Centres - were only closed by the DHSS in the 1990s. Many of them actually functioned in old workhouse buildings.

It's partly because some like to pick and choose individuals to support, and exclude those they deem 'undeserving' from any support at all.

That's mental, my kids must have about 100 and neither of them can even read (yet). Things that just seem the most normal things aren't for everyone

This upstart lad from Manchester is in danger of being a pukka role model. The job to bring him down surely lies with the 4th estate... Mail on Sunday perhaps? Here's hoping that when fans are allowed back into grounds he gets a standing ovation where ever he goes.

Agreed. But if we can’t even get consensus on the need to spare kids from such deprivations and structural inequalities then it doesn’t say a lot about our moral/political compass. Not just because it’s fundamentally cruel but it just increases socio-economic problems and costs later. With awfully self-centered and short-sighted politics and media, public debate hasn’t been very representative over the years but it’s doing a p1sspoor job of representing common sense and basic human decency too.

There are children whose parents cannot read and without proper and effective intervention are getting to high school unable to read or write. In the current climate it is next to impossible to intervene effectively. What is needed is some system whereby community volunteers are able to read with and teach these children. So much of education comes from parents and if the parents are unable to support it can't be any surprise that disadvantage begets disadvantage.
