Whilst I want a normal Christmas..... 08:55 - Nov 18 with 7734 viewsitfcjoe

.....this focus on it re Covid is getting too much.

Talk of a 5 day period where inter house mixing is allowed, because if it is a full week the virus will spread too quickly.

Can we not just do what we need to do to get back to normal(ish) ASAP. I'd rather forgo a normal Xmas if it means we can get back earlier after, than have 5 days of normality which pushes us back a month on the numbers

I don't really buy that. You would have had to go to through airports and maybe other transit with people who could be returning from America, Asia etc. Also the destination may have a different demographic or testing discrepancies that means it appears sensible.

I think UK holiday makers did contribute to the European 2nd wave. You could see the safe destinations close down one by one after everyone headed there. Mainly due to our late lockdown and entirely inadequate test and trace system meaning our community infection rate was ridiculously high. So even if somewhere was safe. After a couple of Ryanair flights, it's not safe again.

For me, overseas 'holidays' should have been off-limits in the summer. That's not saying I'm labelling those who did go irresponsible, it's just my POV. A) it would have reduced the spread/risk of transmission and B) it would have been an even bigger shot in the arm for the UK tourism industry.

I'd have kept cross-border travel open only for essential business needs and cargo.

Totally agree Joe, our family are all doing our own thing, just don't see why people can't just suck it up for one year with the hope that things will start to resemble some normality March/April time.

I do understand that there are a lot of lonely people who live on their own an that has to be taken into account as the mental health side is hugely key, but for the majority, just enjoy not having the outlaws for once!

I think allowing people to fall back into a support bubble with one other household is understandable, fair and right - but like you say the rest of the mixing is just unnecessary - especailly those traipsing across the country to do so

The mindset that we are all safe in England and only foreigners bring these dodgy things over is hilarious. Once it is here it spreads. Whilst many people were visiting small Greek Islands with minimal infection rates the British public were eating out to help out and getting drunk in pubs. We need to stop blaming foreigners, itnisnall a bit daily mail

The support bubble became the catch all excuse for many though. I've seen so many people defending their behaviour because their mates and neighbours are their support bubbles. This is families with families and then with different families the next week. A support bubble is limited to an individual living on their own

....who's elderly and lives alone and my mother in law, who is also elderly and lives alone round mine on Xmas day.

Neither of them have any other family nearby and neither have left their homes this month.

I'm totally confident in my own (and the wife's) adherence to the social distancing rules.

If anyone thinks this is wrong they can sod off.

Similar for us.

Despite being a relatively young couple we are both unlucky enough to have lost a parent and to not have any other family in the country.

We have assiduously followed the guidelines, which have been stricter for far longer up here, but I won't be leaving either my dad or my mother in law on their own at Christmas, whatever the rules say.

*Palm to face*... go back and read Guthrum's posts on strains/transmission and your brain might grasp what I'm trying to say.

I'm not just talking about us catching it from overseas, I'm talking about us spreading it there too.

....and Xmas is a difficult time for me and my Dad.

Very similar with my wife and her Mum.

Everyone's situation is different, people that have the perfect family set up and huge support networks need to realise that they are in a fortunate position.

There's a huge difference between a small very close family meal and dozens of people travelling across the country and partying in a house.

Technically I could lie and say my Dad lives with us, therefore reducing it to 2 households.

Isn't it funny how the rules can bend by BlueBadger 17 Nov 2020 16:33
Can't speak for anyone else, but if my Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Jain colleagues have had constraints put on 'their'' festivals, I'm not going to be over fussed about any of 'mine'.
If the Greeks can live without Easter being celebrated 'properly', we can live with Christmas.

Almost identical situation to ours, I lost my mum in April and my Dad simply doesn't have a support network away from us.

My brother lives abroad and so has been unable to come home since the funeral and my dad obviously can't travel there either.

Our 2 year old is his whole world now and to be with her at Christmas may just about make it bearable for him.

I think there's understandably a feeling amongst some that it's 'only Christmas' thinking of work parties and massive family gatherings but it's far more than that to many families. This year more than ever.

The rules should bend for all or none but throughout this virus there has been a blame brown people agenda pushed.

Can you imagine the uproar if eid or diwali celebrations were allowed?

It would be the same people with the uproar is Christmas isn't

Ah ok, it certainly seems within the spirit if both the widowed parents are best of using your family as the support bubble for the long term of the tiered system.

It's a bit different in the UK with it being traditionally a Christian country and Christmas beinga big deal for the country shutting down.

If I were to live in a country of a traditionally different faith I'd expect more of a deal to be made with regards to their main national holiday

Agreed but you just know that a large chunk of the population will ignore it regardless

And they definitely all voted leave. We have been conditioned to think the population can be as destructive as they like but it will be ok because we used to have a big empire

I’m sorry and I know this won’t be popular on here but to suggest that the likelihood of a person breaking corona restrictions is influenced by how they voted in a referendum 4 years ago is, quite frankly, absolutely ridiculous

‘And they definitely all voted leave.’

It’s actually even more ridiculous than that. He’s saying everyone who has broken the rules were ‘definitely’ leave voters. No one who voted remain has ever so much as stretched the rules. It’s just an unbelievably ignorant thing to say.
