Whilst I want a normal Christmas..... 08:55 - Nov 18 with 7735 viewsitfcjoe

.....this focus on it re Covid is getting too much.

Talk of a 5 day period where inter house mixing is allowed, because if it is a full week the virus will spread too quickly.

Can we not just do what we need to do to get back to normal(ish) ASAP. I'd rather forgo a normal Xmas if it means we can get back earlier after, than have 5 days of normality which pushes us back a month on the numbers

Totally agree Joe, our family are all doing our own thing, just don't see why people can't just suck it up for one year with the hope that things will start to resemble some normality March/April time.

I do understand that there are a lot of lonely people who live on their own an that has to be taken into account as the mental health side is hugely key, but for the majority, just enjoy not having the outlaws for once!

I think most of that is irrelevent to point being that Xmas is the time of year in this country that is the main national holiday across 99% of industries. And is treated as such by basically everyone whatever their religion, or lack of.

Comparing it to Eid, or Diwali in the UK is just totally pointless

I don't remember people making that big of a fuss over the restrictions during Easter which should be a bigger deal to Christians that Christmas.

Totally agree

It will be a brave call if they 'cancel' it whether its the call or not

For my part I agree with your OP and for one year we just need to ignore it and get on with getting on top of the virus

I agree, I think that's certainly part of it.

How many jobs and peoples livelihoods are dependant on a strong December trading period. I saw a shop owner on the news yesterday who reckons 50% of his annual trade was Christmas.

These are all valid factors.

Does seem in idea opportunity for Christians to reclaim Christmas and move the celebratory aspect to Easter.

Problem is nothing gets thought through by this government, which seems to be seriously lacking in guidance.

Two totally unconnected examples. Matt Handcock’s early comments about PPE when he more or less said “you supply and we will pay whatever the cost” An open invitation to scam the taxpayer.

£10,000 fixed penalty notices. It ought to have been blatantly obvious that the majority wouldn’t pay and if taken to court a defendant’s ability to pay would between into consideration.

It isn’so much that Christmas risks a third spike, as one was always expected. It is more that a family Christmas has already been sacrificed by weak enforcement of rules over the past three months.

This current ‘lockdown’ is a joke traffic levels haven’t dropped at all since it began.

Everyone is carrying on as bear to normal as possible. Take the case of Boris needing to isolate because he came into contact with someone who has tested positive I’m sure it was a totally unnecessary meeting that could have been undertaken following social distancing rules.

I agree and will be doing exactly the same. I will visit a small number of close relatives. This is very different from my normal festive behaviour.

That is not the same at all. Except you'll both be doing things a bit differently.

I can see this catching on!

Just imagine five weeks from now, tucking into a pile pile of haslet, guzzling on the vino and playing Mud's Lonely This Christmas on repeat.

Heaven.

That is a fair comment. And you will be aware that no one was aware of such details this summer, I know I wasn't. So I think my point stands.

And if there is criticism, surely it should be directed at those who are aware of all the ins and outs and make the rules, not those who follow them.

People who criticise others for actually following the rules, expecting Jo Public to be aware of the ins and outs of epidermical science and transmission are imho, living in cloud cuckoo land.

Sorry to quite so blunt, I'll sign off before I upset anyone!

Kind of my point about the failure to fully inform the public.

Tho I think not going to somewhere like Spain (as you avoided) ought to have been moderately obvious.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

‘And they definitely all voted leave.’

It’s actually even more ridiculous than that. He’s saying everyone who has broken the rules were ‘definitely’ leave voters. No one who voted remain has ever so much as stretched the rules. It’s just an unbelievably ignorant thing to say.

No it isn’t.

It is a funny thing to say. You just don’t understand the context.

Just like you know, referring to tanked up bum boys, or people with watermelon smiles etc.

Of course, maybe I do you a disservice, maybe you are smarter than I think you are, and you do understand the context, and are just a hypocrite.

Surely your choice of destination would play a part? I chose not to go on a planned holiday to Spain and instead went to an area of Germany with lower rates of CV than the UK.

Others on here opted for Greek or Spanish islands with lower rates.

Blanket labelling of everyone who took an overseas holiday as selfish or irresponsible doesnt sit well. Appreciate people may be anxious but keeping perspective would be handy :-)

Because being safe and legal isn't always a function of what is scientifically sensible but actually a function of what is publicly palatable.

It was clearly a daft idea to go anywhere during a pandemic. Just because the governments of the world were too soft to implement such measures that doesn't make it right.

Why don't you engage your brain and come up with a couple of reasons why international travel during a pandemic might not be the very best thing you can do?

On a side note, now that you're heroically all about following government advice, should the government say you should stay at home and not see family this Christmas (as I will be doing), you'll be extremely keen to follow that advice right?

You wouldn't want people to think that you only follow advice when it suits, would you?
