I accept that to a degree, but phones are made not just for an elite band of technology enthusiasts, they are for mass consumption across all ages. Society demands more and more that you have to have a phone, and they need to be affordable on a long-term basis. You often hear people criticising those who plead poverty yet can "still afford the latest phone". Well it's not entirely their fault that they are being forced to buy the latest phone, when an older phone more within their means simply stops working,

I would say that if you're still using an iPhone 6 at this point then it has indeed proved itself to be affordable on a long term basis. iPhone 6 came out six years ago. Most people use their phones on and off all day every day. On that basis I'd argue that you haven't had a bad deal.

TVs, consoles, PCs, WiFi routers these are all mass consumption items as well but you don't expect a 6 year old TV to be able to decode 4k images, a PlayStation 4 to be able to play PlayStation 5 games, a six year old pc to play the latest games and a six year old router to be WiFi 6 compatible. Why is it any different for a phone?

You're missing the point entirely. I am not doubting they have put technologies in it that render it unusable for a product of 6 years ago, i am saying they were not absolutely necessary, they could have made something everyone could use (Unless you are saying that in 2014 it would have been impossible to create a test and trace app with the technology of that year which i find highly unlikely) This app is more essential for older people as well who now have to fork out hundreds of pounds to get a new phone. It's just one big money making machine.

I'm not sure what you're complaining about to be honest. Technology advances quickly and as such you buy the device you can afford/judge reasonable value at the time you're looking for a phone. You don't buy a device second hand and then half a decade later expect the manufacturer to keep upgrading it to the latest technology for free (even if that was technologically possible). It still performs the vast majority of functions it's designed to do and the number of people out there still using that phone is ever dwindling. You can also buy a different new phone for a fraction of the price of an iPhone. If you're buying second hand phone then it's a bit much to then complain that it doesn't have all the advanced featured of the newest device. If you want the newest features buy the newest device. It's all a bit wanting the moon on a stick. Anyway, fook it. 1-0 down.

Well i disagree for reasons already given so think we've exhausted it and it's been a cordial discussion, I take all the points onboard, and i've got that off my chest and even provided some amusement, so all good. Apart from the scoreline.

"Whoa! You're halfway there, Whoa-0a! Livin' on a Prayer!" I guess you bought it on a Pray As You Go deal, then. Although the instructions will say that the case is waterproof, they are easy to drop because they're Slippery When Wet. Just a joke, it's good to be Bon Jovial sometimes. True Town Trivia: The best thing about John Bon Jovi is that when he tried to be an actor he played a "Rock Star who becomes an actor" who was nominated for an award within the film. At the Award ceremony he was up against an actor who was nominated for the film "The Legend of Johnny Wark" because one of the Production team was a Town fan and slipped that into the script.

Blimey, that's good going. I've got the old SE, which is a 5s with a modern chip, and that runs really well, but I'm surprised the 5 works as it's — what? — 8 years old now? The 12 mini looks brilliant. Smaller phones are better — that's what I'll be buying next. But I agree with the dude arguing that phones should last longer — there's no physical reason for his phone not to work. Ironically enough, Apple are relatively good on this. Any new device will get updates for 5 years, and probably work OK after that for a bit. I do have a 2013 iPad that's still good for browsing, email, Netflix etc.

Look, if you don't know how this technology works you really shouldn't just assume that you know what you're talking about Pre-BLE Bluetooth is incredibly battery intensive. It would have just used all of the power incredibly quickly, meaning everyone would have uninstalled it. Would it have been impossible to do? No. It just wouldn't have worked very well. Now it is possible for Apple to go back and try and patch BLE into iOS but it just would not be worth their time, if it would have even worked at all. If you care about keeping a phone up to date, get an Android and learn how to patch your phone yourself.

So are you saying if the pandemic had struck in 2014, we wouldn't have been able to create a functioning test and trace app that wouldn't kill the battery?

Finally, you seem to understand technological advancement! Yes, much the same as if the pandemic had got in the 90's there would've been no such thing as phone apps or Bluetooth and there wouldn't be the remotest chance of tracking contacts via technology.
