Your preferred 11 when everyone is fit on 14:05 - Nov 22 by woiii | I'd prefer Chambers or Wilson in there instead of Woolfenden, who I don't think has natural positional sense at center back. |
Is positional sense natural? Personally, I would suspect it is far more something that can be coached. Having an experienced head alongside helps. Neither Nsiala nor McGuinness have it in abundance in my opinion.

Your preferred 11 when everyone is fit on 12:46 - Nov 22 by pointofblue | And not ours; if he was I’d certainly advocate playing him every game. However, he’s more accident prone than Chambers and Wilson combined. |
You can have Wilson in there, but he is what he is, a stopper. A Berra type of defender, you cannot be asking someone like Wilson to be a ball playing centre half. If you can accept that he isn’t the cultured type, he takes little to no risks, won’t set the world a light but will rarely let you down, I’d be happy to see Wilson in there.

Your preferred 11 when everyone is fit on 14:06 - Nov 22 by Nthsuffolkblue | McGoldrick would be wasted at CB. I think there is little between McGuinness, Chambers and Nsiala at centre back. Alongside Woolfenden I think I might go with Chambers but a lot of it is about who works best as a partnership. This again is true of the midfield. That combination in the OP is the best 3 currently (if Downes is fit) but would it work as well as Dozzell, Bishop, Nolan or some other combination. I think if Huws gets fully match fit he might get in there. Otherwise, I wouldn't argue with the OP. |
I like us to have a settled partnership but think there will be churn in that position all season-- Chambers - getting on a bit Nsiala - prone to a mistake McGuiness - inexperienced (but contracted to play a certain amount) Woolfenden - lacks positional sense Wilson - not consistent enough for a whole season

How much is McGuinness "contracted to play"?!!! And what is the fine for failure to do so and does the contract cover for when he is out injured or suspended? I wasn't saying we should stick to the same team all season (although that has been the overall policy and is a wise starting point). What I was referring to was those who work effectively together. It can, once that aspect is known and recognised, make sense to change certain players in partnership rather than play ones that do not work together.

It's both isn't it. Generally it takes eight years to learn a position and players are taught their main position + the adjacent one (from the age of 8), so by the time we see them play in the first team they should know the position. Rarely players are converted but it does happen e.g. Naylor, which shows he had some natural defensive instincts. There is an element of defending where players can visualise where everyone is positioned and foresee the outcomes. How quickly and thoroughly they can do that is partly a natural ability. IMO The best player I've seen for Ipswich with this ability was Mings

Yeah, It's going to be decided on form, injury, who plays well together, whether McGuiness has to play a certain amount, whether Chambers is available or has to play fullback. I'm just saying I think it's a position which Lambert will chop and change all season.

Your preferred 11 when everyone is fit on 14:08 - Nov 22 by Nthsuffolkblue | If it was to work, the tactics would have to be to pass the ball in to his feet or play the ball over the top for him to run onto. Shrewsbury were completely done by his pace repeatedly yesterday. Just because he would be a lone striker, it doesn't mean his role would have to be a hold-up role. |
You need a focal point to build attacks, we aren’t going to be able to build attacks by putting it in behind all the time that isn’t going to work. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Chambers hasn’t got the legs to play Center Back anymore If KVY was fit, Chambers wouldn’t be in the team. Lambert still has this problem ahead of him.

He hasn't got the legs to play centre back - a relatively static position - but has the legs to get up and down at right back?

The issue we have is that Norwood doesn't offer that focal point either. That's our biggest issue with this system.

Very rare to agree with you but that's pretty much how I see it. Not so sure your take on manager, maybe you could do it, you definitely have an opinion on it.

It’s easier to carry a ball down the flanks then it is to beat a striker over three yards.

Don’t get me wrong. I think he’s been one of our better players this season. Especially the first few games. But I think he was exposed as an older slower defender in our relegation season, and our first season in this division.

A couple of games aside we were fine defensively last season. Our inability to create chances and control games has been our undoing. I still make Chambers one of our best two CBs. Much more reliable and consistent than anyone other than Woolf.

Agree with you on Chambers here. One of better performers this season. Performances dipepd slightly since Blackpool away where he was outstanding. Still done a good job, mad really that the two full backs, both 35 aren't the ones getting done for pace either 1 v 1, or in behind. Would possibly look at moving him to CB soon with Woolfenden, I don't trust any of the other CB options right now. Bring Janoi in at RB.
