7 games between now and Christmas... 12:04 - Nov 23 with 5321 viewsclive_baker

How many points are we saying?

The fixtures look less daunting from Boxing day, but the next 7 until then are mostly toughies:

Tue 24 Nov 7:00pm Hull City H
Sat 28 Nov 3:00pm Charlton Athletic H
Tue 1 Dec 7:00pm Oxford United A
Sat 5 Dec 3:00pm Plymouth Argyle A
Sat 12 Dec 3:00pm Portsmouth H
Tue 15 Dec 7:45pm Burton Albion H
Sat 19 Dec 3:00pm Peterborough United A

13+ would be good, but I can't see it. I'll go for 10 points.

I think home advantage counts for little.... on 12:50 - Nov 23 by clive_baker

The Charlton game is interesting in that respect. It's the end of a 3 home game streak for us, but a 3 away game run for them. Gillingham Saturday (relatively close day trip admittedly), they're up at Burton tomorrow night then at Portman Road Saturday, which I imagine they'll travel up for on the day. Quite a few miles in a short space of time. They've got a good squad on paper but we certainly shouldn't fear them on Saturday. Having Dozzell back will help.

....the form team in the league, so it's not just on paper.

I'm more concerned about that one than Tuesday!

Burton's the only won I'm remotely confident about getting 3 points from and Peterborough's a write-off already.

Of the others, I'm more concerned about Charlton than Hull despite the current league positions as Charlton have actually beaten the 'decent' teams. So possibly a point from Hull, zero from Charlton. Depending on whether Oxford sort themselves out we could sneak a good result but it's probably a draw, likewise Plymouth. I know our '2nd team' drew over 90 with Portsmouth '1st team' in the cup but have to think their overall performance level will step up in a proper game and that one might well depend on who we have available to select.

Don't think we'll get less than 6, but hard to see more than 10, which is in the twilight zone of 'not awful enough to force Lambert out, but not good enough to make us think we can pull this season off'.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Over the season that'd be 84 points, to play devil's advocate ...

So it is... points per game that's where it would put us now, so I guess the top 6 must all be rattling along at a decent rate! Wonder if that's related to how lockdown has affected the division's poorer teams?

I could see it being 5 or 6 - other than Burton I just don't see where a win is coming from in that lot

Lee Bowyer seems really smart at setting a team up for each game - they are worth watching if you get the chance as mixes things up really nicely.

Seems a very smart guy football-wise, think he's one to keep an eye on

We've beaten teams as good as Plymouth and Oxford this season, tbf. Also, if our big games unfold like Lincoln and Sunderland did, you'd hope at least 1 would swing our way.

Plymouth away is a tough game as just such a long trip, and Oxford can't stay that bad for much longer!

But yet you'd hope so, I think this week could be chastening though

I suspect the confidence is quite delicate right now, so if Tuesday goes badly that might set the tone...

We talk about all these tough games as if they were insurmountable. We are third because we have the third best haul so far. These "tough" teams haven't exactly trampled all opposition (even those at the bottom) and are fallible themselves.

They are in form, and it's no surprise when you look through their squad that they've got themselves going after a slower start, but equally they just drew at Gillingham on Saturday. There's nobody at this level we can't beat, and nobody we should fear.

It should be 15+

I think we will win all our home games and lose the away games broadly speaking so will fall short with 12.

How are everyone's predictions doing on this post from last Monday?

Plenty a tad optimistic of how we'd do in the first 2 games.

I had 7 and Lambert gone after the Peterborough game. Looking over optimistic on the points front.

I said 10 points, which now feels optimistic. Frustratingly I don't think either Hull or Charlton are anything special, we're just a lot less special.

We should be more than capable of picking up 6 points between now and 5pm Saturday but I'm not hopeful at all under the current circumstances.

Lambert out.

I went 7 points thinking that we might nab a couple of home wins and a point on the road. 7 points from 7 games in the third tier ought to have been horribly pessimistic but it actually transpires that I was overestimating our abilities. How depressing.

Isn't it just.

I had the 2 defeats correct for Hull and Charlton. I put us down for a draw at Oxford....not so sure now. The only game that looks like one we can win is Burton at home, and they just smashed Charlton.

We are off to a flyer to be fair. If we can get a couple of draws in the next 5 it’s a nae normal return.

We’re a really good side.
