Damn, sitting here blubbing. I posted something on here a few weeks back. I don’t think I could add anymore to what I said then:
A complex, exploited, tortured soul, with a very dark side. I've been slightly obsessed with Diego Armando Maradona for many years. It's extremely easy to feel repulsed by him: his life has been blighted by depression, drugs, wrong decisions, bad company, often not helped by many of his own traits, but no matter what, I can't ever, ever get away from the beautiful footballer he could be. And that's what it always seems to distill down to when I think about him, just beauty on the field, the simple game that football is, but he took it somewhere else. Something balletic in an era when heathens still stalked first class football. Balance, strength, skill and grace among the ordinary who were allowed to step on to the same patch of grass as him. A magical footballer, a flawed human being. |

I watched quite a bit of 2002 in Indonesia. I was on this island off the coast of Lombok with one half decent telly on our beach owned by a french lad who was convinced they’d retain the trophy and who’d advertised all games outside his bar ahead of the tournament.

I was 7 too but I fell in love with him during that World Cup despite THOG, the next summer I went to Tenerife on holiday and got to choose a knock-off football shirt as a present and the one I chose was Maradona 10.
He lived a hell of a life, he seemed to be sorting himself out and was settled in management until COVID and lockdown came along and he didn't cope with it well. |  |
