That having been said, I am English, remember it happening - and the furore afterwards.
In Argentina there are 2 things you are very careful to discuss with the locals. The Falklands/Malvinas and Maradona.
He has murals to him near the Bombanera (Boca's stadium) in Buenos Aires.
Given CV am not sure on numbers, but you can count on 1 finger a sportsman who would get a million people at their funeral. He is worshipped, literally in Argentina.
I was 7 too but I fell in love with him during that World Cup despite THOG, the next summer I went to Tenerife on holiday and got to choose a knock-off football shirt as a present and the one I chose was Maradona 10.
He lived a hell of a life, he seemed to be sorting himself out and was settled in management until COVID and lockdown came along and he didn't cope with it well.
I remember him scoring against Greece in '94, and, more pertinently, this face....

Sorry Lagos, hijacking your post here - this is a brilliant watch if anyone wants to get a feel on Argentinian football, or, more specifically, the Buenos Aires take on it all....

Caught River plate play in Lima last year. Some RP fans were staying at a hostel I visited. Proper mentalists.
Seen footie in Colombia too, gutted never got to see any in Argentina. Yet :-)

You aware of the context of that match? First time they played Atletico after Goichexia (sp?) nicknamed the Butcher of Bilbao had broken his leg.
Was always going to go off and go off it did. Never dull with Diego.
Yes i remember reading about it. It's after the final whistle of a Copa del Rey final. Not sure he even got a ban as that was his last match in Spain before moving to Napoli.

Interesting read thanks. I'm trying to think where i've seen quite an extensive piece on Maradona, may have been a youtube video. It goes into quite a bit of detail around his increasing addiction to cocaine and how the Napoli fans loved him so much they supported Argentina at Italia 90 when Argentina played Italy in Naples.
Damn, sitting here blubbing. I posted something on here a few weeks back. I don’t think I could add anymore to what I said then:
A complex, exploited, tortured soul, with a very dark side. I've been slightly obsessed with Diego Armando Maradona for many years. It's extremely easy to feel repulsed by him: his life has been blighted by depression, drugs, wrong decisions, bad company, often not helped by many of his own traits, but no matter what, I can't ever, ever get away from the beautiful footballer he could be. And that's what it always seems to distill down to when I think about him, just beauty on the field, the simple game that football is, but he took it somewhere else. Something balletic in an era when heathens still stalked first class football. Balance, strength, skill and grace among the ordinary who were allowed to step on to the same patch of grass as him. A magical footballer, a flawed human being.
Indeed. The only time I saw him live was at Ossie Ardilles (I think) testimonial at Spurs. The warm up alone was worth the admission. He was doing keepy uppies with the ball going about 100 feet in the air.
The 1990 team that he dragged to the final and almost over the line however, were sh1te.
All opinions, but if you took him out of that 1986 Argentinian side they wouldn’t have beaten us in the QF. Man for man we probably had the better side, Maradona was the difference and he was at the height of his powers during that tournament.

Not sure I’d agree. We were awful first two games against average teams, rescued it against Poland and played well again in the second round.
Argentina beat better teams on their way to winning the trophy.
Either way, in 90 they were a shadow of the 86 team - and still went further than us.
