"If we are talking to someone who’s uncertain about the vaccine we should try to be empathetic, actively listen, and focus on the benefits of taking it. "

The vaccine is a treatment, you absolute clown.

What great purpose have all the governments of the world been pursuing to their own ends, despite the huge economic losses they've been suffering?

You're dangerous idiot. And worse still, an idiot who thinks they're clever.

Get off Facebook and live in the real world.

Lockdown protects the vulnerable and vaccines save lives. Get one.

If that's your input to the thread helping Keaneish understand, then great. Look forward to seeing his response.

I'm sorry, but I am angry that Facebook scientists like him actively encourage this sort of thing when it's my friends and family working at the front line of the NHS. Their lives are tough enough as it is and these idiots need to be put back in their box with this pseudo science.

But go ahead, convince him yourself if you're bothered.

Indeed. Have you noticed how mainstream media’s rhetoric has switched from ‘being infected’ to those ‘you will infect’ if you have it? A twist in language and change in direction which seems very timely now a vaccine is on the horizon. I find it staggering how the mass respond without question to messages pumped into them. The Hypodermic Needle theory about linear communication has been around since the 20s and it’s more prevalent now than ever - clap for carers being a perfect example of this theory in effect.

I’m not an anti-vaxxer, vaccines have a purpose but we should be searching for treatments not vaccines. The bigger issue is the divisive media messages circulating further fragmenting community with the notion that someone who gets the vaccine is somehow a more diligent or upstanding citizen than someone who doesn’t. It’s emotional blackmail further fragmenting and dividing whilst lining the pockets of large pharma companies.

Why are treatments preferable to vaccines?

Sorry. I was probably a little snarky there.

Its a frustrating subject for me because its an area I've studied a fair bit (modelling irrational reasoning, if anyone cares) and I constantly see people playing into "their" hands. Whether it's anti-vax, politics, or pretty-much any binary argument. This article is a good explanation of why getting angry doesn't work and is actually counter-productive.

The last 10+ years seem to be a never-ending cycle of that and its doing my head in!

Maybe you should be a little more humble and consider that, like Keaneish and the rest of us, you too do not know all there is to know on this subject.

I understand why you would feel this way and particularly with loved ones working on the front line in the NHS, however I would urge you to take the time to read the attached article and consider things from a different point of view.

The last time we had a vaccine that was 'fast-tracked' to tackle a pandemic ( Swine flu which turned out to be a false alarm ) it didn't turn out too well for a few NHS workers who thought they were doing the right thing. They went on to develop Narcolepsy and in some cases cataplexy, debilitating life long conditions which ended their careers.

Almost as bad as the fact it happened was the way it was handled. Senior health officials insisted that the vaccine had been thoroughly tested ( it hadn't ) and was safe to use and gave staff very limited information, making informed consent impossible. Perhaps even worse than this was the way the NHS and the Government effectively turned their backs on these people, leaving their lives in tatters and refusing to acknowledge what had happened.

Before anyone starts, I know that these reactions are rare and I'm not saying the same thing will happen this time with the Covid-19 vaccine. I sincerely hope it won't and that lessons have been learned, however with the Pfizer vaccine apparently only days away from being rolled out to frontline staff and so far only limited data from Pfizer themselves to go on, you can surely understand why some people may be hesitant.

I don't think anybody should be labelled as and 'anti-vaxxer' and treated with contempt for expressing such concern. What people seem to overlook is that not all 'anti-vaxxers' are tinfoil hat conspiracy nuts. Many are just normal people who were previously pro-vaccine but have either themselves suffered a serious reaction or have seen loved ones suffer from one. Things are seldom ever as clear cut as we think they are.
