Jesus H. Christ, how is it that Windows can't seem to do an update without it breaking something on your computer? My internet completely stopped working and after trying numerous simple and more complicated fixes (I used the command prompt, whatever that is) I had to manually change the DNS (whatever that means) to get it working again. Bunch of absolute arseholes. That's an hour of my life I'll never get back.
Windows updates are nothing to do with a DNS issue.
I would say that given that there was absolutely no issue with my internet prior to the Windows update and the internet then stopped working immediately after the update that there is a link between the two.

I had this issue with an old laptop. The windows update screwed the wireless driver. When restarted the wifi would connect to the internet briefly and them encounter a critical error, or just not work at all. I never fixed it though (keep meaning to look at it as it's my only windows laptop), but I suspect the fix would be to connect via a LAN cable and download the old driver. Intel has a driver page (assuming it's a centrino card)

So it was a complete coincidence then? Blimey. Crazy that when I was searching to see how to resolve the issue that loads of other people had faced the same problem after installing the updates. So many coincidences.

I could easily see a windows update meaning the DNS cache needing a clearing or something similar.
I don't know why the other poster is so adamant it isn't related. Wouldn't be the weirdest thing I've seen happen during a Windows update.

Even clearing the cache didn't do it, that was one of the other steps I'd tried. The solution of changing the DNS appeared to be what ultimately worked for a number of other people who'd had a similar issue after the update. Weird that all of us lost our internet following a Windows update for reasons entirely unrelated to said update.

Without doing weird things like looking in the event viewer, it could have been any number of things. Some weird driver issue, or an issue between your network device and your router that meant specifically setting the DNS address fixed.
There's so many things that could go wrong with even minor changes, especially something as complicated as an operating system.

Thankfully good old YouTube helped me out as my usual tactics of restarting it and running the troubleshooter didn't sort it out. Touch wood all seems okay now.
It's the best remote diagnostic work I've ever seen, tbf. I didn't know you IT nerds could reach levels of omniscience.
I am very pleased in the performance of Dan in our service lifecycle today. His continual service improvement has been impeccable and he didn't even need to refer the ticket to the second line technician. Gav could learn a thing or two.

Should be fine.
As a note you are now going through Google's DNS servers for everything. So you may want to try removing them at a later date and seeing if it's essentially fixed itself just through the act of you setting it.
Alternatively use 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 anyway as they are owned by CloudFlare who are much more security minded and don't make their money through data.
You have my sympathy - my laptop does updates at the most incovenient times and takes forever to do. Was even worse when went over to Windows 10, it took 10 hours to complete!! Then the configuration which takes even longer. Wish they would do short ones that only take 2 minutes to complete!

I understood some of that.

I've wasted a day on my sons PC this week because of them. Had to do a Windows repair (basically a full re-install) which worked initially, but that then decided it need to do another update, which started at 4pm and 'finished' around 10am the next day. I say finished, I could login, but an error message kept popping up saying the desktop could not be found, and there were hundreds of weirdly-named directories and files in C:windows.
Had to then do a complete new install from a USB stick with a downloaded copy of the new 20H2 version, took about 4 hours but seems to have worked. Needless to say, Windows 'updates' are currently paused...

The fact a fresh windows install took 4 hours suggests to me that something may be wrong with the drive.
I did one a few weeks ago and it took all of 20-30 minutes from start to logging in.

You might be right, it restarted itself a few times after the last install was finished, saying it was checking for errors on C:, but didn't seem to find any, I've checked Disk Manager, it says the drives are all OK and error-free. I ran a full defrag on it even though it says it wasn't needed, that took a while too, but the PC does seem to be OK at the moment.
I did say to my son that a new hd might be necessary - it's currently a mechanical Western DIgital - was wondering whether it's worth spending the extra and getting a SSD replacement.
