I'd never seen this photo until tonight. Two great players.

God I wish I could go back to the 70's listening to radio 2 1500mw with Peter Jones and Bryan Butler describing how good these players really were.

Better still watching them with your own eyes and seeing how good these players really were.

We used to leave our bikes in Tacket Street and after the game leg it back from PR to see the final scores and league tables on a tele in the TV next to the SA hall

Those were the days my friend
we thought they'd never end

Indeed. Neither of them prospered after their careers ended. Certainly prematurely in Beatie’s case, and in Bowles’ had he bothered to look after himself.

I did that too. On a Saturday when we were away I was training with a local youth football team in Sudbury called Springlands Colts. We were a good side. Anyone who knows the Sudbury area will tell you that the boys from Woodhall, my area, and Springlands formed a very good youth football club in the 70's . After training some of us would sit behind the boiler grid at the back of Sudbury Upper School and get warm as we listened to Town on radio two 1500MW. Luckily I saw Beattie and those of that era many times. TWTD.

Now about three years ago, there was a discussion about how the town side of theRobson era would have fared against the team of 2017 or whatever it was. There were some/plenty who were quite vociferous about how the athleticism of the modern player would have trumped the skills of the 70s/80s era. I’m not particularly interested in the strength of that argument. But I am so pleased that I lived through a period when the game was physical, skilful, entertaining, and we were amongst the best in Europe. In the last few years I have read people use words like legend to describe modern players who are not comparable to players like the Beat, or Warky, or about a dozen or so other true legends. I will always love the Town, for as long as I draw breath, But if modern football is about athleticism, then it’s totally lost itself somewhere along the last few decades. Sorry I’ll get off my soapbox. And I do realise you saw the 61 side too.

Nothing to apologise for, I agree with every word.

If I had to pick which of the 6 (or is it 7) decades of football that I have so far seen was the most enjoyable, not just from ITFC point of view but generally, I think I would put the 1970's in front by quite a long way.

If the ITFC 1970's were split into three, because it was basically three different teams apart from Mick Mills being a constant, I would say the mid 70's team was the best.

There were several players that bridged most of the decade but I think there were three distinct periods.

My post about the 1970's was about football generally being far more enjoyable (for me) not just ITFC football.
