And that's the problem, they expect people to die from C-19 on the spot as though they'd been struck by lightning.

Rather than acknowledge it's the complications brought on by contracting these illnesses that kills people.

Good luck, I'm going to bed.

Ok no worries

Evening Jeera, good summary and entirely correct to highlight the distinct difference between C19 and flu. That this comparison persists is depressing.

One small point, both the flu and coronaviruses are RNA viruses but the flu isn't part of the coronavirus family, it's in the separate influenza family.

Interestingly (or not), the Spanish flu actually weakened the bronchial tubes and lungs which cleared the way for bacterial pneumonia to come in and kill the patient. A number of people on here and around the world wouldn't want that classified as a flu death given the criteria they seem unhappy with regarding C19 deaths.

Interesting stokie thanks for the insight , I don’t know if you watched those one offs on tv a couple of weeks ago firstly about Spanish flu then about the plague , why when you google flu does it say that it is a corona virus , and the common cold , what was interesting although how true it was I don’t know but the measures they put in place for the Spanish flu were masks and social distancing , why were not masks put in place at the start of this , also I know your clued up on your science , do you think the vaccine will work , or is it to rushed

Well it’s good to have a good discussion on it , thanks , but from what I’ve read the common cold is a corona virus , if I’m wrong I’m wrong no problem , but flu certainly is , like Spanish flu that was , but it’s more about the cure and if there can be a cure or wether it has to run its course before it goes , I honestly don’t know the answer I wish I did , all I do know is , and I’m not getting all Paz now but the ammount of deaths ain’t all down to corona , yes a lot are but what do we do , do we shut up shop and carry on or do we hide from it , I dunno , what do you think ?

No type of flu is a coronavirus, they are influenza viruses. They both consist of a single strand of RNA but the way they infect a patient is different. Coronaviruses use spike proteins to invade a cell whilst influenza uses an interaction of surface proteins to invade a cell.

Whether there can be a cure is moot given there is a number of vaccines becoming available. These vaccines mostly work by getting the body to recognise the spike protein of C19 and attack it. The mRNA vaccines actually do this by getting the body itself to generate the spike protein and then learn to recognise it. This means they don't need to use a weakened virus in the vaccine.

As for the deaths, the vast majority of the deaths allocated to C19 are due to C19. Those people usually didn't die directly from C19 but from complications brought on by the C19 infection and it's effects on the body. This is a standard way of assigning the cause of death and it was the same with the Spanish flu - most deaths there were from complications.

I think it's hard to argue that the lockdowns haven't saved a large number of lives. It was obviously not a perfect strategy but it was what was needed to get us to the stage of having a vaccine. If there is another pandemic in the future I would expect immediate lockdowns, border closures, social distancing and mask wearing in order to cut of the growth immediately.

Ok thanks for a good reply , for what it’s worth I think the lockdowns should of happened earlier , do you think an international lockdown would be better , every country is suffering through this so say a international lockdown , all borders closed , no one goes out for say 3 weeks you have to get supplies in , put the milliatary on the streets , anyone found breaking the rules gets put in a camp , I know it sounds harsh but would it work l

Oh I have , to put it in perspective the plague killed 25% of Londoners , the common cold is a form of corona virus , google it , flu is a form of corona virus once again google it , now this Covid 19 is a new type of corona virus , yes it’s deadly but it’s a corona virus like the others , I did not say it’s a flu , I said the flu is a corona virus , like I said I’ve had to work since March mixing with hundreds of households , that is why and believe it or not it’s your choice , but people who have had to work through these bad times and don’t get me wrong at the start of this pandemic I was sh it scared of going to work , they think and maybe rightly so , that if they have had to mix with households at work , then why should they not be able to see their family outside work

I hate to be a pedant, but it's an area I do know a bit about. When you talk about the plague and London it depends which outbreak you are talking about, the 1348 outbreak for example ran for about 2 years and actually killed about 50% of the population at the time.

The 1665 outbreak for example did kill a much lower number of the residents in percentage terms, but was still an estimated 100,000 people in seven months.

I realise it's not the point you were making, just something I'm familiar with so not intended as a dig.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Seriously how hard is it just to put a mask on when in crowds line that

To counter the 'World is ending' narrative...

1. Everyone you can see is outdoors.
2. Plenty are wearing masks even outside.
3. The summer saw plenty of outdoor spaces similarly busy without the predicted spikes (remember the many posts about peope on beaches)
4. All the shops will have protocols around numbers inside and wearing masks.
5. Pretty much all the current thinking is that mixing outdoors is far lower risk than mixing indoors.

Not to say I'd be joining in such shopping as I wouldn't, cos I hate shopping. But the scenes inside the shops would be far more relevant to the risks of the virus spreading. (Which may or may not be bad)

It’s not the end of the world, it is people being ‘lazy’ outdoors with social distancing. Which you still need to do. Mixing of so many households for example

How did they all get to London? Public transport?

The journey is as big as a problem as the destination

You are allowed to meet in groups of 6 outside. No idea of how busy trains/tubes etc were.

I cannot believe the number of people on that photo without masks.

In France, everybody has been wearing masks in the streets for months, even in small towns and villages with very few people around.

No legal requirement to wear masks outside. The numbers wearing them I'd say are no more than 10% from what I've seen.

Sorry, I hadn't realised that hadn't been brought in for UK towns and cities. It is so much in the norm over here, that it seems very strange seeing people without one. I'm even finding it weird watching tv programmes and seeing people not wearing masks (even for programmes filmed before covid).

It’s just people doing their Christmas shopping, I don’t know what the issue is.

Nottingham, for some mental reason, have had the Christmas market open which was apparently rammed.

I just cannot get my head around it.

Don't think that went too well. Lots of people eating and drinking but no public carzis open, poo everywhere. They've canned it after one day.
