What are you expecting if the vaccines are succesful? 17:16 - Dec 7 with 3669 views | Coastalblue | Just wondered what people's ideas of our short term future are if the vaccines work as hoped? I get the feeling that many people seem to think that by next summer we'll be back to life as it was up until this year. I don't see that, I think even with succesful vaccines we've probably got another disrupted year or two before things look like heading back to the way they were. I think masks, social distancing and all that stuff is likely to carry on through most of next year and it will probably be 2022 before things really start to go back to how they were before (and hopefull a bit better with some things) Perhaps it's just because this year has had such a massive impact on me personally that I'm finding it hard to feel too optimistic about the immediate future. I'm lucky that I didn't lose any friends or loved ones, my primary source of income disapeared literally overnight with lockdown and have been struggling by ever since.

What are you expecting if the vaccines are succesful? on 17:49 - Dec 7 by StokieBlue | Why would you wear it at any outdoor event. This is specifically indoors, where most transmission will take place. I am not advocating wearing the all the time (we don't even wear them outdoors now), just in enclosed spaces. As for a night out - people aren't wearing masks in pubs at the moment. It's more a thing to do when the circumstances permit, which is the case in many indoor venues like shopping or transport. SB |
No I'm aware of that, I was replying to the point of football that Lagos brought up. Although the seats are in close proximity and at a couple of hours per visit there's plenty of opportunity to be catching someone's germs. I simply mean there would be circumstances in which I would be happy for everyone to conform and others where it would be unrealistic. As I also said, seriously, if people were to consider their personal hygiene a bit more conscientiously that would be a great help all round. Clean hands touching items in shops as opposed to some dirty fecker who cannot be bothered to wash his/her hands...again, it's not complicated.

What are you expecting if the vaccines are succesful? on 17:53 - Dec 7 by StokieBlue | Those are fair points. The counterpoint is that wearing them indoors in shops and transport will be protecting the vulnerable long into the future. Flu isn't anything like C19 but it could be cut down a lot as well just through something like this. I don't tend to smile at a lot of people in the supermarket. Guess I'm miserable. I think it will be interesting to see how this develops in society over the next 2 years - I suspect you'll be right and not many will wear masks which will mean that in the end none will wear masks. It will also be interesting to see if any studies come out showing the initial spread is places like Korea was much lower than in Western countries because people were routinely wearing masks. Funnily enough - the morale argument has persuaded me to have the Flu vaccine this year. I wasn't going to get one (Am over 50) but was pointed out that I would be helping protect the oldies so signed up. I think we have adopted to mask wearing pretty well, but I am defo one of those who takes it off the minute I leave the shop :-)

What are you expecting if the vaccines are succesful? on 17:38 - Dec 7 by StokieBlue | To be honest there is an extremely good case to be made for using masks every winter from now on. They use masks routinely in southeast Asia because it works in preventing transmission to others. Look at the low cases of other respiratory illness this year when there has been heavy mask use preventing the spread of flu as well as C19. I don't think it's much of a hardship to wear a mask when shopping for 30 minutes or whatever given the huge potential upside. SB |

I'd love somebody to start a twitbook rumour that the vaccine is going to be added to the water supply.

There are worse things to be called. Although a small correction: I don't like Musk as an individual, I do however think the technology and advances being made by some of this companies are impressive. SB | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Rather than masks what would help is businesses understanding the need for people to take time off work when they are I'll without threat of warnings. That way when you are Ill you can rest. Get better without the need to pass it on to others.

Certainly that would also be excellent. However isn't it a bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted? If you cut out the vectors of transmission then far less people are ill to begin with. I don't see why both can't happen. SB

Very true Altho I must admit I bloody hate the masks. Have to wear them for 11 hours for work and then in shops. Cold sores galore and my ears for some random reason hurt like mad

Yes, it doesn't hurt to try. I'm not very good but it's polite to at least make an effort. Plus make the most of a situation and all that. When taxiing, I took a lad with Downs Syndrome for a few years and although his speech wasn't great, he could sign very well. He used to get very frustrated with me for not being very good, although in my defence I was trying to drive at the same time! Edit: I should point out, he was trying to teach me.
