That '82 tournament was the first World Cup I properly invested time in. Brazil the overwhelming favourites, but Rossi and the Italians put them out in one of the best World Cup games ever. Think Rossi finished top scorer too with another 2 against Poland in the semi final and 1 in the final against the Germans. RIP.

We talk a lot about momentum in Football.
Rossi took the field against Brazil in a comeback to the National Team after serving a 2 year ban over a betting scandal. Remarkably he had also failed to score in any of Italy first 4 games in World Cup 1982. Brazil were huge favorites that day. I still remember the shock of Brazil going out.
It’s amazing to think that given the circumstances that Rossi not only won the World Cup but also the Golden Boot with 6 goals in 3 games ! Everything went his way in 82!

82 was immense. I fell in love with that Brazil team and Paolo broke my heart. RIP
Likewise. England and Brazil going in that second round group stage was traumatic stuff for a boy watching his first world cup tournament. A strange format that was, pitching three heavyweights together in both groups.
By the time Rossi and Italy were in the final, up against Schumacher and Germany, I think most were behind them.

Did an o level and ran home to watch that game, Rossi was lethal. Pleased Italy won the final in the end but there's no doubt the original beautiful game died that day v Brazil.

A great redemption story.
I reckon that has more to do with Schumacher’s terrible assault on France’s Patrick Battiston in their semi final. The German keeper wasn’t even going for the ball and the look of disdain he had while the Frenchman was carried off on a stretcher. Incredibly, he wasn’t even booked!! Dreadful.

That’s what I was referring to. Granted WWII will still have resonated to generations, but in my playground everyone was talking about that.

A foul wasn't given either. In those days - and to some extent now - refs have applied different rules to goalkeepers making dangerous challenges.
