Let's say Lambert takes us up 10:50 - Dec 10 with 2882 viewsDevereuxxx

Playing devil's advocate here and engaging in a bit of whataboutery as quite frankly I'm bored at work.

Let's say Lambert takes us up this season. And while I'm still in the majority who think he should be replaced ASAP, he has proven he can muddle together enough wins to keep us in the playoffs at least, so it's not totally beyond the realms of possibility he actually gets us promoted.

If that does happen, does anyone have any sort of hope he could actually keep us in the Championship, or even be vaguely competitive? We'd have a weaker squad than before and we can assume finances will still be limited. Our total inability to beat teams in League One in the positions in and around us make me believe we'd be battered from pillar to post in the Championship if Lambert was still at the helm. Or am I just being pessimistic here, and instantly reverting to predicting the next misery if something positive does occur?

Can I just check where is Lambert taking us up?

We're currently accumulating points at a rate that would get us to 83 for the season. I don't think it's out of the question that we might make the play-offs, even without improving much. We'd probably be the worst team in the draw, but stranger things have happened than a bad team turning it on for 3 knock out fixtures.

to be fair... I think the 16 games we've played so far are fairly representative of what's in the league. We've 7 games until the mid-way point and four of them are bottom half, 1 mid-table, 2 top 6.

We've played 8 of the current top half and 8 of the current bottom half. Blackpool are now top half but weren't when we beat them, same with Gillingham. Our opening six games was pretty kind though all in all and that's where we made hay. Our form over the last 10 games is bang average midtable form despite a win last weekend.

Sure, agreed our form is mid-table and getting worse. But... if we continue to make hay during our kind games that'll likely be enough for us to hang around the top 6-8.

If he gets us up from here, then he's obviously found something which has worked for our squad.

i think his recruitment has been decent, it's just on pitch where we are lacking - I don't see it happening but if it does, then he has sorted something and worth keeping.

But I don't think there's much to suggest we will. We got a jammy win against Shrewsbury, a spawny draw at Oxford, and a narrow win over 10 man Plymouth. Points wise it looks okay but against similar opposition we were winning pretty comfortably earlier in the season, whereas now we're relying largely on luck.

I’ll get slaughtered for it, but I’ve seen organisational improvements last two, so have a little bit of optimism going into Pompey.

Were he to take us up, it would first a foremost fall down to who can stay fit again for me.

Yeah but you flip flop more than a fish out of water

I agree and I think it's likely that at some point we'll start dropping points in these fixtures too. Not impossible we don't though, particularly if Bishop, Edwards and Downes reappear sooner rather than later.

It's not impossible we go on a barnstorming run and sweep to the title but based on all available evidence it looks unlikely under Lambert.

We will get better as better players return - if we can get Downes, KVY, Bishop, Norwood and Edwards into the team then we are a fair bit better.

"Not impossible" is probably me being ungenerous. Not so unlikely that if we turned over Burton, Northampton, Swindon and Wimbledon during our next 7 games, that I'd be saying "where on Earth did that come from?!"

I think that’s fair. I’m critical of PL, as are a lot of people, but in recent weeks we’ve simply not had the personnel available and been forced to rely too heavily on the youth, who should get opportunities, but flanked by senior heads. Switch McGavin, Bennetts, Dobra, Drinan for Downes, Dozzell, Edwards, Norwood etc and we should be a different proposition entirely.

"Different proposition entirely" is a bit of a stretch. We've managed to look plenty bad with 2 or more of those available.

You'd hope so but I have little faith in Lambert to get a tune out of us even with some of those players back.

I think that him taking us up will be more a reflection on the quality of the division than his ability to set up, pick, coach and motivate a team, tbh.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

No and this is why I am against Kuqi/Burley/Dyer getting the job. I'm sure any of them could get us up but this job is a poisoned chalice in the Championship. We could barely compete under MM and our squad had a much superior base to what it would be if we went up. There is no way Evans is going to invest the money required to get us back up to the lofty heights of 15th.

This is why I want the Cowleys. Hopefully they could acquire a few decent freebies and coach the youngsters to come through and take places in the team. That is our only chance IMO.

Truly impaired.
