I know this has been done to death 20:51 - Dec 10 with 10460 viewsCoastalblue

But can anybody give good reasons why we're still leaving the EU?* It's so depressing and probably worse than I actually imagined it was going to end up now all the chickens are beginning to come home to roost.

The easy answer is thick little Englanders, and that's probably true in some places but I can't believe that's true of all of those wanting to leave. There must be some people with intelligence who believe in this? If so, can you give me reasons why you think it's for the best? (still)

I struggle to see a single positive to come out of it, let alone enough to make it all worthwhile, what am I missing.

I'm hoping to avoid the name calling etc that normally comes with the subject matter, and that I guess might put off anybody who thinks there are reasons from answering but a reasoned response from a Brexit believer would be gratefully appreciated.

*Aside from the fact I realise we've burnt our bridges now probably.

Impressive mental gymnastics coupled with a lack of comprehension. Top Trekking.

Taking exceptionalism to be related to some exceptions given immediately prior is really not mental gymnastics. If it is not what you meant that is fine, I can withdraw the reply that no longer fits the statement, but don't attack someone making perfectly reasonable assumptions

It was clear that it was a genuine question as opposed to the perjorative version by the fact i said it was a genuine question as opposed to the perjorative version. What do you want here, a signed affidavit?

I'd like you to behave in good faith for a change.

Trekkie is a staunch remainer. But obviously we are too stupid to see why he turns up on every Brexit thread making excuses for Brexit. It's nuance, innit.

It's a bit like how Paz is a big fan of equality, but he keeps blundering into threads to accidentally defend the people attacking it. It's so weird!

A classic thread. Accusations are made, i rebuff them and when the accusers have nothing left they just down-arrow for no reason and start a chain of non-sequitur jokey abuse. I've answered all of these already.

I just don't understand why there cannot be a straight-forward debate. I make it a clear policy of showing no personal hostility towards anybody unless it shown first to me. If we all stuck to that how much better it would be.

This new Mr. Reasonable that act you're workshopping is interesting, but not really all that convincing Trekkers.

Do you want to give examples where i'm unreasonable or show non-retaliatory personal hostility or is this another random strike?

It's just strange how you spend most of this time debating in defence of Brexit and the Tories. You say you're a leftist but I've never seen you make cases in defence of Labour or Remain. Maybe you have and I've missed it though.

I have replied directly to you about this earlier in the thread.

If someone had questioned my reasoning for voting Remain because Leave would be a financial disaster, then a debate with me defending that point would ensue. But it didn't because that view aligns with all responders. So it is the bit that doesn't align that becomes the focus of the thread.

I think i've said that the Tories have run roughshod over parliament in this thread too.

Historically i think i get involved in free speech and democracy issues as being more important than whether one supports Labour or Conservative, and in doing that i've probably come into conflict with the so-called 'liberal left'. Because i don't feel part of the 'liberal left' i am still on the left, that doesn't put me on the right.

Guff. Honestly, your post is just meaningless word salad. There's nothing of any real merit there.

It was just lacking a bitter and curmudgeonly reference to 'wokeness' for a Trekky full house!

People didn't like it when i use that word or a derivative of it so i try not to as i'm not here to upset people. I think i'm too nice to be honest with you. Perhaps i should just shout guff at people instead.

It would probably be more intellectually honest than your current approach if you did!

Your posts only really lead me to the conclusion that you don't really understand what you so confidently state half the time. In that sense your profile pic is very appropriate.

Except for that bit where you suggested I might want to leave the country you mean? That's fairly hostile I'd say. I don't really much care for you, but I wouldn't suggest that you should leave the country of your birth just because I'm struggling for a cogent response to one of your posts.

The issue I have with the sovereignty argument is that generally those that peddle it aren't able to name anyhring that we can't currently do as EU members that they'd like us to do outside the EU, or name any particular EU rules they don't want us to have to follow (that's before getting into the fact that these are rules we signed up to as a sovereign nation). I don't know, maybe it's just an island mentality of wanting to feel like we're entirely our own boss, but whatever it is it's completely stupid.

What it has basically all boiled down to in the end was that most 'ordinary' voters for leave/Brexit voted purely emotionally (ie vague, fond but meaningless notions of "sovrinty", "getting our country back" + dreams that the NHS would be quids in - plus a few who were just taken in by the lies); whereas most remainers looked at facts such as trading advantages, protection of good laws re employment, environment, food quality etc.

Pink mound of eye-candy-floss sugar boost lasting 5 minutes v. a visually somewhat boring solid meal of protein, spuds & green veg that lasts all day. Not surprising what 52% of UK voters went for. Abject failure of Cameron to understand that & cower + concede in cowardly fashion to the ERG snouts-in-troughs & Frottage (can I say that? it's late - or early - & I need more sleep).
