Gunboats in the channel 09:03 - Dec 12 with 2967 views | tractordownsouth | Is now a proposal by the Daily Mail and Tory MP Daniel Kawczynski on Twitter. They're acting like it's a game of Call of Duty ffs. I think we should offer free penis enlargements to anyone suggesting this as a serious option - they clearly need it.

Gunboats in the channel on 09:06 - Dec 12 by StokieBlue | Got to protect that 0.1% of GDP or whatever fishing amounts to. Nationalistic idiots. I wonder if all the nationalistic tweets about fishing have cost more in energy costs than the revenues that fishing actually brings into the UK. I'll leave someone else to work it out and look back later. SB |
At this point I think Andy's Records makes a greater contribution to the UK economy than fishing. Most British people only want to eat deep fried Cod anyway. All the tasty good stuff gets sold to... Hmmm. The rest of Europe. [Post edited 12 Dec 2020 13:00]

Fair enough. Thanks for the correction! Its not not an area I'm particularly knowledgeable in, hence I feel compelled to post on the internet about it ;)

Gunboats in the channel on 12:57 - Dec 12 by gazzer1999 | Sorry you did that all on your own, check your facts or go to Hull and see for yourself and speak to a few people there and see if they agree with you. Ask yourself why the red wall collapsed while you are at it. As I said earlier about opinions, everyone has one. I will respect yours, just be kinder to people that differ from yours, that's what makes a democracy. |
Why would I need to go to Hull when I was raised in a fishing town by a family of fishermen? There is no difference of opinion, you're just wrong.

I don't understand why it's so hard for some people to understand. Maybe some people would find it helpful to print out the text below and keep it in their wallet for the next time they find themselves balling up their fists and grinding their teeth because someone doesn't agree with them. Yes. Everyone has an opinion. No. Not all opinions are equal. Yes. You get to say your opinion. No. People don't have to respect it. Double check that your opinion isn't dumb.

Gunboats in the channel on 12:33 - Dec 12 by gordon | These people have been desperate for the EU to treat us like a third country for however many years, and now the EU is actually getting bored with our nonsense, not affording us special treatment anymore, and actually treating us like a third party, these people are going to lose it pretty quickly. Could get really messy because it will be very difficult for Boris to try and reign them in when he's literally ridden to power on the back of egging them on for 20 years. |
Daily Mail and these old skool Tories are just getting even more entrenched in their sovereignty or bust position But it really is bust And is isolation what a country needs in 2020... and can you trade in a large community economic zone without giving away quite a bit of control It’s all just mental As a Scando MP said recently - the UK has already lost much of his global position since 2016 and its bargaining position - the city is far less powerful and influential, there’s been far less inward investment so out manufacturing sector is weaker to buy European machinery

I'll be sure to buy and eat a hat if gazzer1999 is right though. Imagine if next year the city of Hull becomes a great old fishing port again! In fact, this office job lark is getting a bit boring... could get the old girl out of dry dock and rake it in on the trawlers instead! Thanks, Brexit :) But it was good of him to admit that Brexit will adversely affect everyone in some way though, which is strange as I thought it was going to be a great thing for us all.

Maybe it was a typo and it should have read 'fisting port'?

Gunboats in the channel on 12:33 - Dec 12 by gazzer1999 | I agree with your sentiments, regarding people and their livelihoods. My wife used to live in Hull when it was a very vibrant fishing port, if you have visited there in the last 20-25 years you would see how it has become without all the fishing that was on a massive scale before. I heard recently that for every job at sea it creates 10 ashore related to fishing. I for one will be happy that there is no super trawlers electric stunning the fish and hoovering up all around. Hopefully it will allow the fish stocks to replenish. Brexit is bad for everyone in some way, but there will always be some good as well. |
One of the odd things about the fishing situation (and there are many) is that in Scotland and NI, only a tiny proportion of the quotas have been sold to foreign boats / companies - but in England, home of the fish patriots, it's more than half the quota. It's really the way the quotas around the English coast have been sold to non-English boats that has caused the problem in fishing communities, and this had nothing to do with Brexit or the EU. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The recent Fisheries Act doesn't say anything about foreign-ownership of vessels either apparently. I expect those thinking we'll suddenly have a thriving industry with British owned boats, crewed by Brits and catching 'British' fish (as if there is such a thing lol) will be sorely disappointed. And it won't be helped by squaring up the the French who we sell by far the largest share of our catch too. It's an embarrassment.

It absolutely is and some of the fishermen are realising they’ve been had.
