That was a bit strange, getting relegated but getting a place in Europe because we had the best disciplinary record. Can't think of any other team playing in European competition whilst in the Championship.

Wigan must have done after winning the fa cup three days before getting relegated

And Millwall must have done after being FA Cup finalists.

Birmingham and Wigan. Both won cups but were relegated from the Prem in the same season.

Yep, we played as many European games in the second division as certain clubs have participated in in their history.

Merthyr Tydfil qualified while in the second tier of the Southern League (then the equivalent of level 7) and went on to beat Atalanta 2-1 in the first leg of their Cup Winners' Cup first round tie the following season (they lost the second leg 2-0).

One of my favourite quiz questions is, which was the lowest ranked team in the English leagues to play in a major European competition?

The answer being Merthyr Tydfil, when they were in the Southern League Division One Midlands, in 1987/88, through winning the Welsh Cup. Pretty much the equivalent of Leiston playing in Europe today.

They actually beat Atalanta at home https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/41288991

Newport reached the quarter-finals of the CWC in1980/81 (with John Aldridge and Tommy Tynan). West Ham were in Division 2 and reached the semi-finals.

The same nights Newport were playing Carl Zeiss Jena there was another team playing against Saint Etienne.

They certainly did, I believe they attracted a bigger sponsor because of it

As others have said, it's quite amusing we played the same amount UEFA Cup games in the second tier as Norwich have done in their history

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!
