I've just had a work circular about how to 'diffuse a difficult situation' ie when a member of public is getting stroppy.
I reckon it should be 'defuse'

What say you?

You are correct.

But pointing it out to the author would make you a 'grammar nazi' so best not worry about an easy mistake.

If you diffused a terrible situtation it would only make it worse for those around you :)

You are right, I'm not sure how one would diffuse a bad situation. Just spread it out a bit?

I guess that's the thinking. Like putting water on tea spilt on a carpet to thin it out a bit.

Tht might work. If the stroppy member of the public was right in your face you could both defuse and diffuse the situation by running away.

And the lack of a full stop at the end. If they're not going to use one there, why use one in the previous sentence?

“Diffusing a difficult situation” is having a much-needed fart.

Which might then create a situation that needs to be defused.
