Not sure what else he’s supposed to do! Don’t think it’s really fair to blame or mock him for needing to change th8ngs as things evolve.
The issue isn't the new position, it is that the whole approach to Christmas up until now has been so obviously wrong.
And it isn't just about this, it is the whole circus of Johnson's leadership over the last 12 months. Popularity wins over all else unless there really is no choice, such as now.

if it adds 0.4 to r then there is little prospect of r ever falling below 1 in the areas with this variant. there is therefore the potential for rapid spread which out paces hospital capacity. which has always been the biggest fear in government. so in that sense it does seem scarey.
Exactly this.
We could barely get the R below 1 with lockdowns, that baseline one is now what would have historically been 0.6. People need to take the time to grasp that and understand the implications.

Still think we missed a trick - from yesterday 2 week lockdown taking us to NYD. Schools closed anyway and most industries close down for most of that period.
2 weeks, like Spain had earlier in the year - you cannot leave home for ANY reason unless medical emergency.
That would stop the spread.
Would stop the spread cos most people would off themselves before covid got them

Well as someone who knows a little about mental health and the impacts of what happens when people "off themselves" as you so eloquently put it, I disagree.
Yes peoples wellbeing matters and we need to protect people. But this virus is the single biggest health emergency we have seen in modern times, so the rulebook goes out the window and we do what is needed.
Look at Australia and NZ now they took the pain, did what was needed and on the whole are now having a great almost normal time.

Communal worship will continue for people who have spent a lifetime telling us god is everywhere.
Cos the virus definitely doesn't transmit in God's presence does it?
My wife's community (Latin American) are all hugs and double cheek kissing, this new strain is 70% more infectious... Nope can't see a problem allowing this, in enclosed spaces, many using public transport and buying food off unlicensed providers.

Did you understand anything that the scientists just said?

Yes. Why have you asked me that?
I was simply agreeing with the post I quoted, I think what will happen will continue to be large scale rule breaking. This announcement has come too late and many will continue with their Christmas plans regardless because they won't have the fear of being punished.

I agree. Some will. Hopefully the lowest number possible. If 25% still go ahead, that's 75% who have taken notice and it should save a lot of transmission. Not that anyone should justify breaking the rules on the basis that most others won't; that would be incredibly stupid and selfish.

Sorry to hear that.
My uncle was meant to be visiting my parents for Christmas. He’s had a very challenging year mentally and he was really looking forward to it. Saddens me that he’ll be on his own, but needs must I guess.
Yes it’s been a long awful year and even a reduced Xmas would have made people’s lives just a little more tolerable. Ugh.

Fair enough, I mistook your manpower point to mean that people should try if they wanted - it's clear you didn't mean that though.
I actually think they could lock down people in and out of London for instance on the main arteries but as you say, they don't have the manpower to stop everyone and clearly they wouldn't even try.
People shouldn't have a fear of being punished, they should have a fear of contracting a possibly life threatening virus, if not for them then certainly for their older loved ones.

He should have gone further. Got the army on the street. Shoot a few people. Then the public would take notice. Those that lived through 2 world wars got on with it, and for year in year out. People need to man up, act responsibility, but they can't. People keep talking about well being etc..... You have to make sacrifices or this will just go on and on.

Absolutely livid. My mum is away for a 3 night break in a tier 2 area from 27th. I was hoping it would be cancelled. Sounds mean but ffs we're playing with fire.
I was really hoping they would bump everyone up a tier.
Don't worry still a good chance it will be cancelled due to insufficient numbers with those in Tier 3 & 4 unable to travel. We had a 3 night break, last weekend, cancelled as instead of 400 guests there were only 20 left after they cancelled those from Tier 3.
Warner Leisure Hotels, suspect it might be a Twixmas break, cancelled one of their to venues near Lowestoft which should have started yesterday..

How nice it must be to live with any of your family.
Or be on the same continent as them.

Stowupland High school now returning on the 10th instead of the 3rd with a week of zoom lessons instead.

I've got a very cynical, distrustful side to my character when it comes to Tories. Got this sneaking suspicion that stricter rules were going to be announced last minute all along - get people spending money, boost the economy then boom! clampdown!
