I'm no fan of F1, but Hamilton was the most logical choice for his achievements this year. |
I don't understand the hate he gets
He BUILT the car with Mercedes, Has been instrumental in the set up of, Whilst the car is fast, the amount of skill to manage not just the tyres, but the engine modes, the fuel, the aerodynamic changes on different corners. The commitment and maturity of keeping out of problems and knowing if he can't win, at least get a podum place and don't take risks. He took at lot of risks in his early years which cost him and over the past few years he's in a world of his own when it comes to managing a grand prix. You watch the likes of Vettal, Verstappen, Bottas all spinning out when under pressure, locking up, going wide, Hamilton glides through the laps.
What alot of people don't know is take the silverstone grand prix, last lap, burst tyre, he didn't just coast home, he was doing well over 240 kph on the hanger straight, and whilst people say it;s luck, theres a certain part of luck, but also, he changed the break balances to only revert to rear breaking in those last set of corners... hence no complete blow out. |  |

Thats the key thing, the rookie driver was driving
1 - the car built by Hamilton and Mercedes
2 - Russell is on par with Hamilton 2007, he will be a champion no doubts there's lots of similarities in his driving style to that of Hamiltons which helped him even more in the car as they didn't have to change to much to match the style of Russell behind the wheel, i.e Break Balances, downforce etc.... He brakes as late as Hamilton prefers where as Bottas breaks early, so put Russell in a Bottas car and it wouldn't have looked as good as the balances would have been out of sync and unnatural for a driver like Russell.
Hamilton is very engaging to those that don't have an agenda with him, he's very similar to Andy Murray in that sense. | |

He's engaging in the sport he's part of, he's not a key note speaker, IMO the people who don't find him engaging when it comes to his sport are the ones who bang on about " it's all about the car" clearly showing they have no interest in the sport otherwise they would take the time to understand the drivers, the cars and the ins and outs of the sport rather than following the standard 'hamilton hate' on social media. | |

I very much doubt that you watch F1 press conferences, based on your engagement comment. It's not like football press conferences, where they stick to some scripted nonsense about "the lads" doing well or trying their best. The vast majority are there laughing and joking with or at the media and Hamilton is no exception.
Only if it is post race and he lost is he lacking in engagement, and that is rare as he rarely loses. |  |

I struggle a bit with F1. My ski buddy is fanatical about it, attending races etc but I personally find it boring. Is it a sport? Yes, but for me it’s compromised by the differing performance of the cars and lack of overtaking. As for Hamilton, he’s obviously outstanding in what he does and in achievement terms, deserved the SPOTY award this time round. |  | | |

Certainly some valid points there but on the performance front - how is it fundamentally different to Liverpool and Crystal Palace having different levels of performance throughout their squad resulting in a 7-0 thrashing?
