Yeah why not?

I did not vote in the last one because I was on holiday (I know that I could have done a postal vote).

Don't know if I voted in 1975 for The Common Market thingy either.

I was too young to vote in 75

I know my dad voted for us to join cos “it would annoy that jumped up big nosed frog De Gaulle”

Your father did not vote to join in 75 as there was no vote. Ted Heath took us in before then, Harold Wilson gave the people an in out referendum, much like 2016 but with the opposite outcome. We then had to suck it and listen and watch while the anti common marketers argued to come out of which there was more labour MP’s than conservative. The Tories were always very pro the common market, which was what we joined not an EU super state. It will only truly work with monetary union if all tax, vat, minimum wage, health service, and benefits are unified across all countries, something which will take years to achieve.
I remember my mother telling me if she did not vote to stay in my dad who was in manufacturing would lose his job, because that’s what was being said at the time. Turns out we stayed in and still the job went along with masses of manufacturing jobs, not sure it happened to Germany though.

Fair comment.

In 1975 I wax 13/14 and my main concern was getting to PR to see Town win. It was a uncomplicated time before girls then work, mortgages, kids etc etc

Looks like we are of similar age, with the same futures ahead of us back then, Westbourne high school for me, failed the 11 plus, but didn’t hold me back.

Quite, the UK joined in '73 and as you rightly point out, the 1975 vote was an remain/leave vote.

I do remember some industry suffering as a result of the new competition though; cheaper imports did cause damage and sent British businesses under.

However, to then spend years and years adjusting to that climate, it's utter madness to try to undo all that so long afterwards when there's no relevance to those days. Completely different times and I fear for the further damage this time.

The people I have seen do well in life benefiting from the Union who have voted out because the decision no longer affects their own futures in the way it will younger generations is saddening to see.

Possibly the most selfish and ill-informed decision ever.

It would have made some sense to come out in 75, but not now.

Don't ask the public, they're like turkeys voting for Xmas.
Proportional Representation - no thanks, let's stick with FPTP. W*nkers.
EU Referendum - Let's leave 'cos the Sun and the Mail said so. W*nkers.

A new PM needs the guts to say she mentioned in a speech (once) that she favoured rejoining and therefore it's part of the mandate so we rejoin without a vote. Done, and done.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

I agree with your sentiments, however we are where we are and now have to do the same as 40 years ago and make the best of it. My one hope is that we start making things again, something Britain in the past was good at, the opportunities for our young people should now be at the forefront of planning. We need to ensure they are fully trained ready for the opportunities that could and should arise. For too long it has been cheaper to get labour in to do the work and the young have been neglected, this must not be allowed to continue and I hope whoever is in government in the next 10-20 years makes sure it is a priority.

When did people vote against PR? I think you'll find we were offered AV which is now used to justify the opinion that there is no appetite for change.

Long and winding road me, parents moved a lot but I ended up at Northgate Grammar.

Got a mix of O levels but all my important quals were via day release and self study

Fair point.
Peeps voted for FPTP because AV was a bag o' sh*te.
Alternative yes but NSFW.
PRP would have won the day and that's why it wasn't offered
I voted for AV because I am against FPTP.
If we had adopted AV I think PRP would have replaced it as most peeps would have seen it was a pony.

Not sure we were offered PR, just the alternative vote. However I believe Italy have PR and they usually have a general election nearly every year. Yo do not always get stable government as they always fall out. Coalitions in this country have been a disaster Lib/Lab pact in the 70’s Tories/ Lib, Tories/ DUP. Let’s be honest could you see the Tories and labour working together.
You always see the little parties extract out of the bigger ones their ideologies and then threaten to pull out unless they get their way, it would be like living through brexit for ever.

PR would fracture our political parties.
The old dogma would be done away with.
Labour would split into left and Blairites.
The Tories would splinter ERG and One Nation.
We'd end up with a coalition of centre parties and that is what would be best for stability and sensible, pragmatic policies.

I think we would still end up with politicians that are still only in it for themselves. They are all out of touch with the real world, they only have to serve as an mp for one term and the benefits for severance, pension etc the rest of us can only dream about. Just look how Blair and Cameron now live it up.

I was 15 and you are right. It was a simpler time of avoiding doing as much work at school as possible, dossing about, playing sport and following the football. The referendum passed me by really. I remember Tony Benn and Michael Foot being very hostile to it, being thought of as a bit nutty (I wonder what they’d say now) and the tories being all for it. How times change.
