If you create a monster where the top clubs have all the best players, and all the next best players, and all the best young players, this is what you get.

You say that, but the division of the Premier League's TV money is far more equitable than in most European leagues & hence the disparity in playing budgets is smaller. Hence the PL tends to be more competitive, which is one reason why it has sold well in overseas markets, thereby increasing revenue for the clubs.
Atletico Madrid reached the CL final a few years ago with a smaller playing budget than QPR so differences in playing style aren't just down to wage budgets.

I'm not sure that the PL is truly more 'competitive' given that it's still the same 2 or 3 clubs that are only ever truly in for a tilt at the title. Certainly, there's little to choose between the also-rans but that's broadly the case across Europe as well.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

The Premier League has been won by 5 different clubs in the last 10 years.
La Liga has been won once by Atletico; otherwise it's been Barca or Real for the last 16 years.
Juventus have won the last 8 Scudettos & Bayern have won the last 7 Bundesligas.

Yes a fair point. The bigger disparity is between the Premier League and the EFL.

I wonder how much impact chasing the ball for 90 minutes is having on them being 4-0 down at HT in a winnable home game...

As I said in this thread (to back you up) everyone saying how good they were to get a point at Liverpool misses the point.

Sport is all about WINNING and a WINNING mentality. The likes of Fat Sam focus purely on the opposition, how to contain, hold them off, and scrape a result. You cannot just change that mentality match to match.

If you sit off and worry about how good the other team is, you will lose more often than not.

Nice way for Sam to end his career, relegated and hopefully then retired.

Agree. It's not like anyone is expecting them to go to Liverpool and get a result. Two draws now against City and Liverpool but a win against Leeds would have been a better result. I'm not suggesting they go and make a game of it against Liverpool but they could have been well drilled and kept it tight while being more adventurous.

In an ideal world, every team would play lovely attacking, free flowing football and persist with it even when they’re 8 points adrift of safety.

However, owners don’t see it that way. If they can somehow scramble to safety playing anti-football, they’ll take it every time. If Allardyce could have uglied us up last season, I’d have taken it.

That said, I wholeheartedly hope WBA crash & burn. They have a history of this approach. Their recent managerial list also includes Megson & Pulis. They’ve also had De Matteo & Mowbray. Once the pretty make-up stops working, they turn to botox pretty quickly.
