Schools announcements 18:21 - Dec 30 with 2207 viewsvapour_trail

Typically shambolic from Williamson and short on key detail for school leadership, teachers and parents. Finally got round to publishing some detail this evening.

Here in tier 4, my primary kid will be back next Monday, assume the secondary on the 18, but wouldn’t be surprised if that changes. Be interesting to see the impact of kids mixing again.

Trailing vapour since 1999.

The only surprise is that they announced it before Friday.

The next surprise would be if they did not back track on primary schools on Friday.

If that is the criteria for closing them, won't many more be closed than they have announced? (I think they will be.) The impact of Christmas Day mixing has not yet hit has it?

well they've been clearer about schools than they have about universities. anyone's guess what it will mean in practice.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I thought they hadn't announced yet, just that some tier 4 schools would be closed. I was behind as was cooking.

I've just checked and I'm astonished they are opening here. The numbers on the local covid data posted on here yesterday were awful.

Not closing in Suffolk. Was also surprised too given the current situation in Ipswich hospital.

The numbers here were 900+ per 100k but have finally dropped by 180 on the latest data so I’m guessing that’s how we’re open.

Presumably they will use this information on Friday to say reluctantly they are forced to close them.

It plays to their audience that it was unforeseeable and they are being forced into doing it despite their deep desire not to.

According to this excellent website posted by NthQldITFC yesterday:

https://localcovid.info/

We were at 987 cases per 100k last week and are projected to be at 1517 this week with an R of 1.5. Those numbers seem to be higher than the official government numbers though but also seem to have some thorough modelling (explained on the website).

The boroughs to the north and south of us are closing but apparently not here.

Editor of the NHS magazine is surprised as well:

Great call to keep as many schools open as possible.

I find it remarkable that folk don’t consider the mental health element of children not going to school.

I am sure that is absolutely to the forefront. I do feel for the staff who are just put out there with fck all protection. From a selfish perspective, I’m delighted my boy is going back next week as he really struggled with the six month break.

He has a short memory and is well pissed off.

Of course they do. They also worry about vulnerable relatives and friends.

It’s not a “great call”. It’s more a desire to ignore the science until it becomes impossible to do so, which will only result in schools closing more over time.

Malwarebytes is blocking that site for me, citing its use of a Top Level Domain as possibly dodgy.

Can someone who knows about These Things maybe help me to understand this a bit more?

I am aware that Malwarebytes, and some other protection, can be over-zealous.

Malwarebytes is pretty cautious when it comes to non-standard TLD's, in this case it's likely the .info that it's wary about.

The website itself is fine, it's all academics from Oxford and a few other universities who have written it.

Cheers ears, I wondered how they work tbh.

I had a quick Google and saw it relates to anything following the dot, but I don't really have a grasp on why that is.

Does it make them harder for software to recognise if they are dodgy or something? Like a disguise, by splitting the address?

To be fair, compared to most of his party he certainly is. I would rather he stayed as education secretary than have someone even 1% as bad as Gove.
