Appreciate both sides are superior to us and have better players, but the way both teams break with purpose, pace and numbers to support their lone strikers and get beyond them is really refreshing to see. Highlights our own deficiencies and something we just aren’t very good at and haven’t been for some time. Just hope PL and his coaching staff are watching.

Villa have improved in the space of a calendar year in the same way Leicester did when they won the league. They’re excellent to watch.

Pfft, like Lambert is interested in COACHING his players.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

To be fair, some managers don’t, but you’d hope his coaching staff would.

I think one of the major differences between good ( most?) PL players and even some teams in the championship to us, is these players are genuine “ athletes”, eg have pace, endurance , strength agility, as well as the PL pre requisite of football specific skills .

Our players are generally plodders. We have very little genuine pace in our squad , and those that do have it are U23 level and lack experience. This is why KVY was such a breath air when joined us - and why he has been such a massive miss since being out injured for the last 14months !

I watch seventh tier football these days. It was eighth but we got promoted.

The biggest differentiation is pace. Absolutely. The two players we’ve had in the six or seven years I’ve been here who’ve had ability matched with pace, have moved up to league football. There are lots of players with great technique however.

Moving the ball at pace has been a problem for quite some time. Ponderous passing amongst ourselves is worthless possession. All decent sides have one or two players at least who attack defences with intent. Without Bishop and perhaps Edwards too, we have nobody. That's why until the last few games, Dobra's absence from the 18 has been mystifying. A fully fit KVY would help in this respect too.

You could probably argue getting players that are athletes is perhaps easier than getting players that have real quality and genuine ability on the ball. The term, ‘this player has a good engine’ is something that has always been associated with our game.

We’re reliant on two 35-year-old defenders bombing forward. This is a problem. As Mick Mills said the other week, we need to get Dozzell further up the field so he can do meaningful damage with his vision and passing.

Our best, most balanced midfield is on paper, Downes/Dozzell/Bishop. Trouble is, with those three all fit, Lambert will drop one of them to accommodate Judge.

Interesting watching the likes of Leeds, Palace (earlier in the season) and villa. It’s a cliche, but the attack as a team and defend as a team rather than dink it about keeping possession on parts of the pitch that really won’t cause a threat.

One of Town's problems is that you can't break with pace if the other team have 10 men behind the ball! A fair number of teams have sat in at Portman Road which means you need to have the patience and quality to break them down. Man Utd and Villa were both trying to bomb forward as soon as they had the ball so neither team ever had 10 men goal side.

And against the teams that have come to attack, such as Portsmouth, Town are so slow at getting the ball forward - sideways / backwards - the opposition have time to get their 10 men behind the ball!
