Main teaching union advising its members to inform their employers that it is unsafe to return to work this week, and that schools should move to remote learning as the Government was advised by SAGE over a week ago.

The Government are making a right mess of this issue. Again.

No. I think taxation for the rich is at roughly the right level. I would reduce taxation for middle and lower incomes

And dismantle the NHS and de-invest public services - all the things that poor benefit from much more than the rich.

Your ideals would hurt the lower paid nearly as much as those who actually rely on benefits.

EDIT: unfortunately, the headline of lower taxes is a vote-winner because few make the connection to cuts in services. It should be obvious after austerity.

I don’t think reducing taxation when we hopefully get to move on from the cost of the pandemic, will be an option.

It is if you want a small state like Paz - no NHS, no public libraries, very low benefits and only for the absolutely proven can't work, lower state pensions, bigger class sizes, more unqualified teachers, higher university tuition fees.

Who wouldn't want to live in that world?

I can kinda see where you're coming from. I flirted with the whole libertarian thing back in the day, when all the cool kids were doing it.

When you see the combination of incompetence and corruption in this government I can totally see the appeal of giving them as little of my money as possible to waste or dish out to their cronies.

However when you look at the countries with the highest standards of living around the world its not the small-state low-tax countries at the top of those lists. Whilst its not definitive, and there's still philosophical arguments to be had, there does seem to be pretty strong empirical evidence that lower-taxes don't benefit the poor in the way you think they do.

Are you not concerned about having to pay the price of Brexit for the rest of your lifetime then?

Have you answered how you explain that wanting unregulated free markets and a small state don't equate to looking after the rich at the expense of the poor yet then? Because if you have I have missed it.

If you have low taxes and low investment in public services, the rich can afford whatever they need. The poor either rely on charity or go without. That is what has been happening ever since this party took control of the country. They excused it with the term "austerity" initially but just look at how readily they hand money out to their mates - and not with Covid. Brexit preparations saw a ferry company that didn't exist being awarded a big contract. This, in addition to its ineptness, is the most corrupt British Government ever.

I accept that you agree with a small state but at least be honest that it protects the rich at the expense of the poor.

You can vote for Brexit without necessarily wanting either of those things ....you may just have issues with who gets to pull the levers and whose interests they pull them for.

The last ten years have seen an assault of sorts on public services. An absolute assault, politically driven IMHO.

These inherently hurt the poorer parts of society. Then you get knock on impact on kids (my area of work), for example,in terms of all types of abuse, educational opportunity, health - physical and mental.

Lower taxes doesn’t have to lead to this. It could lead to reduce expenditure in arms development for one, but with politicians who advocate it, it always, always, does.

I can’t imagine there are many full time jobs that pay so little an individual pays no tax whatsoever. Also, consider tax is not just income tax. Everyone pays VAT, fuel duty, alcohol duty, all the other types of taxes. Bringing these down provides poorer people with more disposable income.

you want to look up vat sometime. your party has always put it up. it hurts the poor more than the rich but that tories for you. oh by the way labour did reduce it but the tories put it up , once in power. they even wanted to hurt the poor by putting full vat on power.
so vote labour as they the party who reduced vat and the tories increase it

I’m not going to prepare you a mini alternative Paz budget. I just believe in the general principle that the role of the state (with tax and regulation) should be as small as possible.
It’s not like I’m saying just do away with all the schools and hospitals and let people fend for themselves.

He wants low taxation but to maintain spending on public services.

Or at least he can't explain simply the NHS, libraries, schools or the police as where the brunt of his attack on public services beyond even the current levels of austerity would be preferred.

I'm actually interested in Paz's justification for his beliefs. Hopefully they aren't just regurgitated talking points without any real thought behind them.

Interestingly he calls for less state involvement in providing public services but then is upset by a non-state entity such as UNICEF getting involved in providing services to the British public. It's all very mixed up and muddled thinking. It's almost as if Paz doesn't want anyone to receive any help and assistance full stop - no matter the source. Everyone just gets by on what they can provide for themselves, context of their environment be damned.

Liberterianism is the ultimate sixth-form w@nkers' politics. For all the professions of egalitarianism, stripping down 'big giovernment' ultimately only benefits rich white straight blokes. It's generally preached by t0ssers even more naive and stupid than those who think Jeremy Corbyn was a competent opposition leader.
