I have bought the book for the Appalachian way - about 2000 miles all in.

We'll see if that gets off the ground first :-)

Google maps gave me a walking route back from Singapore to Ixworth. Obviously you'd need a pedalo for La Manche (as it's now called as part of the brexit trade deal)

If you do try that and you encounter two blokes playing banjos, run in the opposite direct very fast. Or it'll end badly for you.

I did a few miles on the AT about 20 years ago. Mate of mine did the whole thing and I met him in a small place called Glasgow, Virginia and joined him for a week's hiking.

First thing I saw on entering the village (Population a thousand or so) was a gun store. Stayed out in the open huts a couple of nights too. He decided to do it after reading BB's book "A walk in the woods".

Stunning scenery, scary people.

Just got the book. No firm commitment here. The logistics of visas is an issue though. You get 3 months on a tourist Visa (Esta) but it takes on average 4-5 months to do the walk.

One option would be to fly to Canada from Washington (Which is around half way) The other is that google tells me if you overstay but are less than 3 months over, you just get kicked out rather than deported and are not even blacklisted for another visit. But laws etc. change so that is high risk.

The proper way would be to apply for a longer visa but that's got to be a proper pain in the arse.

Best time to start is the spring, so that's looking like next year :-(

We were in that part of the States in 2014, at the time of the Scottish referendum. The locals wanted to talk about that. They saw it as secession and hoped if it went ahead it would be the trigger for the South to rise again. You'd chat to some seemingly normal chap, who'd suddenly go into a deranged conspiracy rant about Obama, Clinton etc.

It was all there for trump to exploit.

Suggest you read A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson first.

I recently finished it.

A taxi driver (No relation am sure) took me on a 20 mile trip to an airport near Waynesboro. I guessed he'd not been overseas, but turned out that that day's journey was the furthest he'd been. Ever.

And another cabbie, black guy, told me the origins of the name Lynchburg. Quite a humbling conversation.

I walked 60 odd miles in Virginia a few years back and slept out in the huts too!

You should see some of the people walking round Alton Water yesterday. Not quite flip flops but going for a walk on muddy tracks in gazelles ffs.

What story did he tell you? It appears to be named after its founder, John Lynch who owned the ferry over the James River and successfully petitioned to found a town.

He was strongly anti-slavery though and freed his own slaves in the early 1800s.

He told me there had been lynchings.

Now I am thinking he was playing me for a tip...white guilt for the sins of my forefathers.

Cheeky fcker!

Now am wondering if I should track down the black cabbie and demand reparations for making me look like a knob?

He'll have told everybody he knows. When you next return to the States, the passport control guy will say 'Hey, you're the schmuck who fell for the Lynchburg story!'
